I am about to buy a much needed pick-up and would like to be able to tow my N and hog around. Some have told me the 150 will handle it with ease and others have warned that the 250 is a must! I will go with your votes!!

I vote that you get yourself a Cummins Powered Dodge and you can drag your n and a Ford truck simultaneously. Just my opinion..... .

I have towed my 8N, 5'box scraper, and 7'back blade with my F150 Flareside-302-5speed. I don't think it's that big of a deal. I would not buy a bigger vehicle for very occasional hauling. Now, if you plan to do it every weekend, or for a living, that might be a different matter. For what its worth however, I've hauled 3100 lbs. of gravel in my S10, and regularly hauled a ton.

150/250 your call

either way I would avoid the new V10
just got back from picking one up in Durango Colorado [in a fifteen passanger van] and put almost a hundred of fuel through it to get 653 miles back to Jackson Hole, Wy.

Also would avoid the power joke diesel with an automatic. Might be alright with standard shift but the one I drove in an Excursion with an automatic flat wouldn't hunt.

Your mileage may vary

Ford and Chevy. Go with a Dodge with a Cummins!

Just kidding. I like 'em all. My friend traded his 1999 Dodge on a new Chevy, gets better gas mileage. Dodge does have a better warranty right now though.

Too bad Studebaker and International are out of the pickup business.

No body asked what I would do with a clean slate. New intercooled Cummins with a six speed. No contest.

Take a look at the F150 with the 7700 payload package. This replaced what Ford called the F250 light duty. It has a heavier duty frame, heavier duty brakes, shocks, springs, higher capacity cooling system, heavier duty transmission and the bigger 10.25" rear end with 7 lug rims.

If you go with an F250 don't get the 5.4L motor. Go with the V10 or better yet the Powerstroke. Everybody I know who has a Superduty with the 5.4 wishes they had gone bigger as it is underpowered for such a heavy truck.

Any F150 set up for towing will pull your N just fine. The tradeoffs for going bigger are, More money up front, more money in the gas tank, harder ride and higher maintenance costs.

Arther, How often do you pull a heavy trailer? How far do you pull a heavy trailer? Is your country hilly, or flat? These questions will help make your decision. Both the F150 and F250 have their advantages, but which is right for you? Have you been to the Ford truck dealer and looked at their brochure? With that you can get an idea of how much each truck can pull. I was very suprised at how much weight an F150 can be rated for. I believe as much as 7500 pounds or more. Philip.

I haul my tractors with a W150 Dodge with the 318 and 4 speed. Works fine as long as the load on the trailer is loaded properly. Too much tongue weight and the truck bogs down. Too little and you run into handling problems. Do I push it? No. I take my time especially going downhill or on a rough road. Hauled an F-14 Farmall the other day 30 miles and it handled beautifully. Didn't wander and didn't bog me down.

... your credentials concerning experience with the F-150. Have you really driven one, or are you using someone else's data on the 7500 lbs? Does driving a brochure count? He doesn't care what you believe. He wants facts from people who actually drive these beasts. Arthur wanted valid opinions, not speculation on how and where he plans to use his truck.

Mr. magoo has a good point about GVWR, all 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton trucks are not the same, a lighter duty 3/4 ton truck (Chev,Ford ,Dodge) may be just what the doctor ordered, it would have a smaller semi floating rear end, smaller/lighter suspenion, brakes, springs etc. than a heavier 3/4 ton truck but would be quite a bit bigger than a 1/2 or heavy 1/2 Pickup. It sounds to me for your needs a lighter duty 3/4ton would fit the bill for your needs.

hope this helps.

Hi Arthur. I've got a '97 F-150 extended cab 4x4 with V8 and towing package, and it does fine towing my 8N or my 3000. However, my heavier Suburban with larger V8 does noticably better. One of my neighbors has an F-250 with the Powerstroke diesel, and another neighbor has an F-350 crew cab (4-door) diesel. I've towed off-shore fishing boats from Central Virginia to the Outer Banks in North Carolina with both of them. The F-350 needs a football field for a turning radius, so it would not be my choice, though that sucker will pull stumps without breaking a sweat. The F-250 Powerstroke, on the other hand, would by my tow vehicle of choice if I had to tow on a regular basis. That's one sweet truck! Whenever my F-150 gets replaced, it will most likely be by an F-250.

Hope this helps..... ..... Ed

I suggest you test drive all the brands. I am an equal opportunity consumer of pickups. I have had Fords, chevys, Dodge and an International Travelall. Not a pickup but the strongest towing machine. All of the pickups were rated 1/2 ton, but you get different suspensions. My Dodge was a longbed with a 318 and a 727 transmission. I hauled a tractor from north Ga to middle Florida with it and had no problems. My current vehicle is a Ford F-150 with the 6600lb package. It is a six with automatic and 3.55 rear. It has 4 wheel disc brakes and a 7500 lb towing package. For occasional towing, say up to 100 miles, it is just fine. I have gotten as much as 22mpg from it on the highway. I never checked the mileage towing. I admit it is not as powerful as a V-8, but suits me for what I needed in a truck. I suppose if I really did a lot of hauling I might go with an F250. Of course, Dodge has just come out with that new hemi powered pickup and I would sure have to look at that. Oh, I have pulled my tractor with my Toyota 1/2 ton but would not recommend it. Stopping is really scary.

I'll vote for the 250, you will be pleasantly surprised at the difference this truck will make in your overall feeling when towing, personally I've got a '94 F250, 7.3 Turbo diesel, 4x4, ext. cab, long bed, I get 17 mpg (probably would be better w/out 4x4) it's a good truck and sharp when I wash it twice a year whether it needs it or not, cant take it to Wal-Mart unless you wanna hike a mile to the store, it doesn't have a tight turning radius.

I had a 1/2 ton '68 Chevy for 10 years. I "got by" with it because it had airbags in the rear coil springs. When I really needed to load it down I could put 40 psi in the bags and do OK. But I realized that whenever I needed a truck I was always loading it down. So when one of the airbags sprung a leak I decided to go with 3/4 ton. Much more useful for me. If you're gonna tow your tractor around, by all means get a 3/4 ton. I towed my tractor once with my 1/2 ton Chevy and it was embarrassing. Then I borrowed my sister's F250 Powerstroke and man! What a difference!

I've had this f 250 for 5 years now. Last time I hauled a tractor it did just fine.Friend of mine hauled 3800 pounds of rock with his 250 350 miles, got 19mpg with it. it was riding kinda low. My neighbor brought home a bobcat with his 150 , came and got the 250 to take it back. He was kinda pale from too small a truck. I usually do about 60 to 65 on the interstate and get 19to 21 mpg. Diesel is why. I do that regularly with about 1to 2 thousand pounds in the back. The first truck I had was a half ton 2nd 3/4 this one 3/4. If you haul anything in quantity and it has weight, get a 3/4 ton. Please be aware it just as dangerous as the omnipitent full size suvs that drive through traffic like snowplows. Prentice

...in my pickup I have 9 4x8 sheets of sheetrock, 27 8' studs, 11 sheets of 3'x5' cement board and 4 sheets of 3/4" plywood, plus 2 tool boxes that combined weigh about 1200 lbs. A typical days load.
And I'd have no qualms about, right now, hooking up to a trailer with an N on it and go wherever.
It's a 2500HD Chevy (don't hold that against me)
If I didn't have to have the 3/4 ton for work and just wanted to pull my N to a few shows or a boat up to the lake on weekends I would definately have bought a 150 (or 1500)
The difference in milage is about 3 or 4 mpg better with the 150. Brakes, u-jonts, clutches, tires, etc. are considerably cheaper for the 150 than the 250. And when you go to resell it someday the 150 will sell much quicker than the 250 at about the same price.
Pound for pound and dollar for dollar you're much better off with the 150 than you are with a 250 unless you can take all the write offs etc. on the bigger pickup.
My 2c

Oh, and my knees are tired so it's an automatic. You'll never see me buy another stick.

Do yourself a favor and look into a 3/4 ton Dodge.
I love my 2000 with the Cummins Diesel with the 6 speed manual and 3.55 danas and 34 by 13.5 inch tires.I can pull up to 12,000 pounds (with the proper hitch of course) plus I get around 21 MPG on the Hiway and 17 city depending how hard I wanna push that go pedal. One funny thing about diesels though is that they seen to get the same fuel economy at a given speed whether you're loaded or not. I do the same at 70 whether I'm pulling our 9000 pound race trailer or I'm empty. Either way keep it shiny side up!!!!! !!!

Arthur, I've had both. I just hauled a 8n 385 miles behind a F-150 with no problems. I have 2-F-150's one with 6cylinder and one with v-8 and automatic. The 6 cylinder with the 5 speed will pull circles around the v-8. But when I had the F_250 with the 460 4 speed it would pull a house but wouldn't pass a gas station. If it was me I would get a F-150 Defiantly with a stick and probably a v-8 for a little more power. You can always add leaf springs or put a set of booster springs on it. Then you got a F-250 with out the low low gears and poor gas milage. John

By putting booster springs or adding a extra leaf does not make it a F250. You have added nothing to the brakes, nothing to the tires and heavier rims, nothing to the axles and nothing to the frame, I've pulled with both 1/2 tons and 3/4 tons and no way is there any comparisons of the two, the 3/4 ton may cost a few cents more for fuel, but worth every penny in safety. Art: The biggest difference between the two trucks is the suspension. I'd definitely go with the 250- and one of the heavier GVWR packages at that, so that you'd have a full-floating rear-end.

You could tow the N with a Volkswagen(shudder!) if you had to, but your truck will last a lot longer, and you'll be a lot safer with a 250 if you plan on towing much at all.

The difference between the 150 and 250 ammounts to the difference between a car and a truck.

Another word of advice: I used to be in the auto salvage business, plus I've had many flavors of car-carriers/wreckers. In the old days, there wasn't too much seperating the Chevys and the Fords....but since about 1990, the Fords have a big advantage. The suspensions and rears and trannys on the Chevy are much lighter and weaker than the Fords. (sorry Checy lovers....but it's the truth)- Notice what the towing companys mainly use now- you'll see 8 Fords for every Chevy. The Dodges are good.....when they are properly outfitted....but the price of a properly outfitted one gets a tad high.

Don't know about the strength of ford and chevy drive train. Did work as a machinist in a gates parts plant for ten years. Ford really tightened the quality standards in the 90's. Other manufactures got a little better. No disrespect for GM or Dodge just an observation.

I have to ask-how often and how far? If it is not very often and not very far I *might* consider an F150 optimized for towing just for the difference in day to day fuel mileage. However, if you are going very far with it or will tow very often, do yourself a favor and opt for the 3/4 ton.

Have a 98 F150 5.4 auto and no trouble towing. Between the two I'd go the same way again but it depends how often you tow and how much you drive empty. The 250 is definitely better for towing but as others have said the trade off is ride and economy. I put on most miles not towing and the 150 is more than satisfactory for the times I need to use it for towing. I tow an 860 or a 9n occasionally and a fairly good sized boat on a couple fairly long trips a year. You'll do fine with either. REM

Arthur, A F150 that is powered right and set up right, engine, transmission, tires, springs, hitch, etc will pull an N and hog with no problems. However an F250 will generally do the job much easier. There are a lot of light duty pickups put out with stock springs and passenger car tires that are just too lightly sprung to do any meaningfull work. They were built for running up and down the road and lookin' pretty. Now if you need a pickup to do some serious hauling and pulling get an F350 dually. I have owned them all, even back to the days of F1s and F100s. I currently own an F350 and it makes a very stable towing platform.
For an occasional tow with the rest of the time driving empty and F150 will do the job. I suggest you figure out what the weight of your tow will be and closely examine the data plate on the door jam and the owner's manual as to the Gross Combine Vehicle Weight of the vehicle you are considering. Remember, it is easier to get the load moving than it is to stop it.

Arthur, I own a 2001 F-150 4x4. It pulls my 640 Ford tractor with ease. However, if I had it to decide on one now, I'd definetly go with the F-250 or F-350. If you have the money, the 7.3 liter Powerstoke is a good choice. It will give more horsepower and torque. Gearing is also important..I belive 3.73 or 4.10 gears would be sufficient. If you were willing to wait awhile, I hear that in March or so of 2003, they are releasing a new 6.0 liter diesel engine with more horsepower(300-325) and torque(550-600. I'm slightly FORD biased, (tractors and trucks), but Dodges are also a good route. The Cummings Diesel will pull good also. Hope this can help!!

Good Luck,
Tommy

Why don't you get you a good truck and go GM. 3/4 ton would be best and not too big! I have a Ford 1/2 ton 4x4 now and a 3/4ton GMC and I will tell you I will never own another Ford. It would have to just be a beyond belief deal if I did. From my experience the phrase FoundOnRoadDead is pretty approriate.

Now those were cute ones, but regardless of what all is said here the Fords are just not what I would consider a good built truck. WE have drove GM trucks up until this 85 had to come into the picture as a truck of necessity and emergency. It has done fairly well for the 2 years I have had it but in no way compares to the GM's I have had, they outdid this Ford 2 to 1. I'm not saying that there are not good Fords out there, this may just be a problem I'm haveing with this one, but it is enough of a problem to make me steer away from them. Everyone has a favorite and thats cool, if everyone drove the same thing it would be pretty boring on the road. Good luck too all with their vehicles but as for me unless something amazing in terms of costs comes around on a Ford, I'll stick with what I have had my best luck with. I won't rule out trying possibley a F-350 if one was cheap enough?

You can't argue with something that's given you good service!

And then there's the question of age, too- like I said, the further back you go, the less differences there were (in terms of quality) between the two makers.

And then there's the fact that they just dont make the newer vehicles (both manufacturers) as good as the old in many ways.

....as long as it's not a P-O-N-T-I-A-C....if you get my drift! 8^)

I agree with ya man! I really think its a mind game one plays with ones self. You get your mind set on what you like and thats what your going to like. I do know what you mean about the P O N T I A C by the way. I always did think that was funny. Funny too, 20 years ago you could buy a new 1/2 ton 4x4 for under $10,000, now you can't hardly touch one for less than 18,000 and they are not built half as good as those back there around the mid 80's.

Exactly! People get so caught up with brand loyalty0 I guess the $bazillions$ that the makers spend on advertising really works!

The one thing that's good about todays trucks: The availability of diesels.

All the talk today about saving fuel..... I dont understand why diesels havent become the norm, in cars and trucks? Could you imagine if everyone switched to diesel?

I looked at a diesel earlier this year. Bank said no! It sure was nice too. I know the rep. that chevy diesels have but this one sure looked good, ran good and drove good. It was a 93 1 ton ex. cab, fire engine red, 6.5 turbo diesel, 4 spd, and I had to hunt to find even the slightest dent on it. Just had a new clutch put in too and new front seat covers. Get this it was priced at $6980.00. i fell in love with that truck in just the short time I was looking at it. I guess there will be another one coming along when I get ready though. For the question if everyone had diesels, we couldn't hear ourselves think for all the clattering. :^)

Richie..... ...if everyone switched to diesel, the price of diesel would go thru the roof. And all the oil heating homeowners would hit the roof. (grin)

Remember, the original reason for diesel engines was cheap fuel. Diesel fuel was originally a "by-product" of oil refinery for gasoline, which was a by-product of luminiating oil refinery (kerosene). Which sure beat the he11 outta whaleoil lamps or piglard candles..... ....Dell

Dell: I know you are right....that if diesels were ubiquitous, the price of diesel would skyrocket- but I think for another reason. I think the fact that diesel is refined less than gasoline, would tend to keep the prices low....especially if the volume of sales went way up- BUT, of course the government would rape us even more than they now do, and probably quadruple the taxes on it!

In England, around the '30's, they started using diesel buses to escape the high price of gas there....and of course, before a year was up, the government made diesel more expensive than gas- taxing the $h1t out of it.

I used to think that the early 80's GM 350 "diesel" fiasco had something to do with the unpopularity of diesels....but it's been too long for many to remember that.

My vote's for the 250-Superduty. I haven't checked prices in about three years but the last time I did I was surprised to find that the 250's were going for less than the 150's around here. It must have been because of the overwhelming popularity of the 150's. Don't rely on a comparison of sticker prices. The dealers seem to have more room to negotiate on the heavier trucks.

That's a good point. I got a good buy on a one ton Chevy with 350/auto, 4:10 posi and factory towing package. Gets 14.5 MPG unloaded. The dealer had about 10 and couldn't move them because no one wanted a plain looking two wheel drive truck. It's got air, tilt, and cruise too. For towing I'd opt for the heavier truck for the safety and power margin regardless of Ford, Dodge or GM.

Just some thoughts.

Much luck

Gordon

I vote for the 3/4 ton or larger. The trade-off is fuel mileage and ride and more expensive tires for more payload and towing capacity. I had a 3/4 ton Ford back in 1974 and I never had trouble with hauling anything. My little Dodge Dakota is rated 1/2 ton, but it won't carry much.

Some states permit a 1 Ton to have Commercial plates....In Minnesota, those are less money than either 1/2T or 3/4T. And a 1 Ton probably isn't any rougher ride than 3/4 T. Ask the questions.... can you get a farm truck plate? etc. etc.

Wsa just down in New Orleans for the Saints game. A dealer down there was advertising F150 for $12,888. Did not go look at one but that sounds really low. Figure it had no air, radio or any extras. I would go for the 150 unless planning on doing a bunch of hauling. But if you got the duckies go for the 250.

Authur..... ....Yeah, ya can get by with 1/2T pick-up, but if'n I have a choice, 3/4T. Bigger brakes, suspension keeps on the road better, greater GVWA. Dis-advantage, higher license taxes, ruffer rider. I like my 1996 3/4T Dodge Cummins Diesel..... ...Dell
