Rube Goldberg strikes again....

Hey!

Got a question, gurus:

I know that some (most) loaders are powered by a front-mounted pump, which connects to the motor via the hole used for the hand crank. Could that same hole be used to power just a SHAFT for power? I could see a bracket supporting a flange/pillow block bearing. I know that the shaft speed would be that of the motor--not the 550 rpm of the PTO, and that it would vary with the motor speed. Is this feasible? Has it been done? I'd like to use it to power a front-mounted snow blower idea that I have. Of course, there'd also have to be a jackshaft to lower the speed down to around 500-600 rpm to be compatible with the blower.

Whatdaya think?

Ron

Don't know if I'd mess with your main powerplant. You might slip into a ditch, and bind up (stop) the driveshaft,,,which in turn might mess up the engine crankshaft et al. You aren't talking about a lot of hp here, and to get the "right" speed by gearing; which you said would be varied by engine speed... If you have tons of extra futzing around time, go for it, but I'd pull out the wallet and melt the plastic first. (safer) Bob in NY

It might work, but I think that is a lot of weight to hang out there. If I were mounting a snow blower, I'd use a hydraulic pump on the engine and a hydraulic motor on the blower. With hydraulics you can switch conections to get the rotation you need and can control the blower speed with a relief valve. Dave..... ..

Dave,

Yeah, I'd thought of that, too, along with hanging a separate small engine (>5 h.p.) to power it, but I'm so CHEAP! The hydraulic pump (Prince brand from Northern) is over $300, and the motor at least half that. I'll come up w/something--and soon, I hope.

Thanks for the input.

Ron

Sounds like a good place for the geard reduction portion of the niponese gear reduction starter :-)
