Senator Paul Wellstone and his wife Sheila were good folks. Whether or not you agree with his political philosphy, he and his wife were staunch advocates for victims of domestic abuse and issues that related to well being of children. I am saddened not just because of the tragedy that affects his family, but because the campaign here in Minnesota has been such a bitter campaign. I am so tired of negative ads from all parties. Lost in all of the campaign rhetoric is the fact that these are all good folks who are doing their best, the best they know how. Do you remember the good old days when the great orators debated in the senate like Humphrey, Dirkson, and so on. Senator Wellstone was an outstanding orator. I will personally miss his presence representing our state in the US Senate.

As the poet John Donne said, ".... any man's death diminishes me...." and therefore I sincerely regret the loss of the human being Paul Wellstone as well as his family and the others who also died.
However,as a Senator and politician, Paul Wellstone influenced the passage of legislation that has "diminished" our country.

Many good people die every day. Most never are heard about in this so called real world. They were just good hard working people who never went into politics. I allways wonder why if you are a politision or a super star your death has more meaning then the rest? I have known a lot of good people who died and the only reconision they got was a two liner in the back of the paper. Mark H.

Rich: I appreciate your comments. I wish our Senate had more who spoke and lived their minds. There have been a few, a Few, on Both sides of the aisle who could go to sleep at night resting on their strength of convictions rather than their wealth of contributors and supporters. My heart goes out to you. Prentice

Our prayers are with the crash victims and their family.

Mr. Wellstone may indeed be a good man, and he may have been a good father and husband.

But as a Senator, he put environmentalist lobbies (not nescessarily pro-environment) in front of American interests. And in light of North Korea's nuclear missile threat, he voted consistently against defense of America with American Technology.

S.257 - "The Cochran-Inouye National Missile Defense Act of 1999" - (related bill H.R. 4) Declares that it is U.S. policy to: (1) deploy as soon as technologically possible a National Missile Defense (NMD) system capable of defending U.S. territory against limited ballistic missile attack (whether accidental, unauthorized, or deliberate), with funding subject to the annual authorization of appropriations and the annual appropriation of funds for NMD; and (2) seek continued negotiated reductions in Russian nuclear forces. - passed March 17, 1999 (97-3)

S.1873 - "American Missile Protection Act of 1998" - States as U.S. policy to deploy as soon as technologically possible an effective National Missile defense system capable of defending U.S. territory against limited ballistic missile attack (whether accidental, unauthorized, or deliberate). Cloture motion on motion to proceed rejected by the Senate twice (9/9/98 and 5/13/ 98) by the same vote (59-41).

S.1635 - "Defend America Act of 1996" - (related bill H.R. 3144) Expresses U.S. policy to deploy by the end of 2003 a National Missile Defense system that: (1) is capable of providing a highly effective defense of U.S. territory against limited, unauthorized, or accidental ballistic missile attack; (2) will be augmented over time to provide a layered defense against larger and more sophisticated ballistic missile threats; and (3) does not feature an offensive-only form of deterrence. Cloture motion on motion to proceed rejected by the Senate (6/4/96) by a vote of 53-46.

Wellstone voted AGAINST all three of these bills, and he was a leader of the throngs that killed oil exploration in ANWR, forcing us to import more oil from places like Iraq.

Was he a good man? Perhaps. Was he a good Senator? Depends on your priorities for your state.

Did he contribute to a country Hank Ford would've been proud of? I doubt Paul would've supported your right to drive a 8N vs a contribution from the Sierra Club.

I personally believe Coleman will be superior for America.

In any case, don't get on me about politics on this board. Just don't try to tie in respect and deference for the deceased, which we should all share, with the lionization of his life's work.

God rest him and his family.

Well said, Jeff. It is always a tragedy for anyone to lose a family member, and nobody deserver to die that way. It would have been much better for the country if he had merely lost the election.

Well Roper,
I aint trying to make you angry.
But I will maintain my right to speak my mind however I see fit.
You wont see me criticize others for statements that I find trite or maudlin.
It is their right to feel and say what they think.
To me Senator Tombstone represented all that is wrong with America. He was one of the worst politicians for reducing issues to a reactionary, emotional, tear jerking level. Forget intelligence. Forget reason. Forget the facts.
Be totally honest with the people and Just feel. For 12 years he represented special interests that vie against everything I was taught was good and true. Every moral value that I was taught by family, church, the military, or just having to work for a living, his constituancies were against.
I didn't wish him dead. I would have seen him defeated in this election first.
Lord knows, we'll have our share of memorials,
and naming buildings after him. We'll have plenty of time for sympathy and feelings. If I understand Jeff Hoo correctly, a tragic death does not erase a hundred votes in the Senate that embarassed me as a Minnesotan, and affronted me as an American.
And I just might engage in tomfoolery at his passing.
He might have been a worthy man but he was a foe to me.

ultradog, i wasnt trying to change how you think or infringe on your freedom of speech. i just thought the jokes and comments about a man who tragically lost his life were in bad taste. regardless of his political stance, his family and friends still have to deal with the loss of not only him but his family as well. i am as conservative as they get but he was still an american and was serving his country. although you and i might not agree with his veiws, remember he was voted in by the majority. in this "me first" screw anyone else world it is becoming i just thought the good N folks were a little more compassionate. pete

Sen Wellstone, his wife Shiela, a daughter, 3 staff members and two pilots were killed in a plane crash in Eveleth, Mn. They were on their way to a funeral.

I probably wouldn'thavevoted for Sem. Wellstone
But I think he was correct to be the only one to vote against the So-called "Patriot" Act. If there was ever a law that should not have been signed , this is it. Regards, Rich

Ummmmm, Jim.....remember the bashing of Thomas Jefferson (remember him.....one of our founding fathers?) by the Clinton cronies, to try and rationalize and justify Cigar-boy's behavior in our White House Oval Office?

Methinks it was part of a vast, leftwing consiracy.

You see, these "rightwingers" are just speaking their minds about a sensitive topic.

Unlike their liberal counterparts, they did not take a poll to determine what position to take. They did not pretend to shed tears (like President Clinton did at Ron Brown's 1996 funeral). They did not take the politically-correct course of action and heap praise on someone with whom they fundamentally disagreed. They simply voiced their honest opinions. You know the word "honest," right? We heard it often prior to 1992.

It's a shame you have a problem with freedom of speech (well, OTHER people's freedom of speech, anyway. Obviously, it's OK for you to tell people they have no class, or to stereotype them as "rightwingers.")

Maybe someday we can all be as classy as you.

Ya must listen to Rush and the like and beleive they are telling the gospel truth. Do you think people like them have your best interest at heart? Well Paul Wellstone did!!!!! !!!!! !!! Why don't you really study up on him and take a look at the real voting record to see who is or was fighting for the little guy and who was fighting for the big corps and themselves. Don't follow Rush like a sheep to slaughter. DO SOME HOME WORK!!!!! !!!!! !!!

There's so little difference between the right and the left these days, how can you tell?

Note: Remember people- both left-wingism and right-wingism, regardless of the rhetoric, lead to nothing but tyranny. Our constitution is neither right nor left- it is overhead! (high above both tyrannical philosophies)
