9N Transmission leak

My folks just bought a 9N. Sight unseen. There is a hole, on the under side of the transmission, in front of the drain plug. It's about a 1/4" hole. It looks as if a cotter pin is sticking through the hole, it's bent and it seems as if this was put in this hole to seal it. It will not push up through the hole so it seems to me that this was put there intentionally.
I don't want to push it up and have it flying around in there tearing everything up.
Give me some ideas on how we should take care oif this.
It looks like you have to tear the whole damn thing apart to get to it.

Cotter pin gives the oil a path to drain, should there be a leak. There should also be one further up the case towards the oil pan too.

I spilt my 2N in the front last weekend to replace the oil seal because it was leaking. Not a bad job but it can be intimidating at first. If the leak is really an occasional drip then I would live with it. If a steady drain then consider the split. No special tools involved but you should have a heavy duty floor jack and a couple of jack stands. All parts are readily available.

Good luck

Bob,
Thanks for the info.
The leak is a drip sometime, and a steady stream other times. I think we are going to have to go in and fix it.

I need to replace the oil seal in my sherman transmission. Any idea where I can get the seals.

Tim..... ....I'm so glad you stopped by and was moved to ask this question where it would be hidden from view from most memebers of the N-Board that would know the answer. You do know that you have a much better chance of getting answers if you post at the front of the N-Board, don't you?

But surprizingly enuff, I know the answer and I will share it with you. The Sherman aux tranny uses the same tranny seal that the main N-tranny uses. p/n 8N-7052-A..... ..... respectfully, Dell

That's right, it's supposed to be there. The reason there is oil or whatever leaking from that hole is becuse there is a leak elsewhere, like the input shaft or the bearing retainer. If it's leaking real bad, you'll have to split the tractor to fix it. If everything is working allright, and the leak isn't causing any problems, run it for a while like it is. Then someday, tear into it and fix it. Good luck and have fun with it!!!

Todd,
Thanks for the info.
Sometimes it is just a drip and then sometimes it's a stream. Have you done this repair before?
Do you have any idea what seal it is that I need to replace? I only want to do this once so is there any other seals that could be replaced at the same time we split this beast?

Andy

Oddly enough that cotter pin is supposed to be there. It is to keep that little hole open so any oil will not build up in case of a leak. MY suggestion would be to do nothing and be happy, unless of course you have a major leak then you should split the tractor and repair the leak. Allen (;^)
