I keep on going thru points, condenser I have a 8n 12 volt conversion with two ballast resistors in line when cold it has battery voltage or more running when hot it drops I think my problem is the voltage is burning the primary side when the resistors have no resistance (cold) because they last for a while but have no longevity I need specifics on how to drop this voltage before the resistor ? And I want to keep this one 12 volts I like it thank you in advance Roger

Its a 47 8N ft mount dist 12 volt conversion with a 6 volt coil so far the coil does not burn up does not get hot when running but points and condensor get fried .any help on what to run between junction block and coil will be appriciated , Thank You RSP

Roger..... ....sorry, but my ability to understand WHY you need a 3rd resistor escapes me.

Yes, you may wire in your 12 to 6 volt converting resistor before the ballast resistor on the terminal block, or after the terminal block on the way to the coil. Electrons don't care who goes first.

If you have installed your 2 resistors in series like flashlight batterys, I don't know what your problem is. I gave you the necessary voltage check readings. You've gotta help too.

If you are frequently and consistantly having to replace your ignition points, you may have an oil contamination problem on the points..... ....respectfully, Dell

Ill get a new set of points and condensor and take the readings and see what happens this tractor runs like a fine tuned machine then just dies no spark and the coil was replaced I do not think its internally overheating could be a possability ?? Ill get the readings and get back Thank you kindly Roger

Roger..... ....gonna hafta display my amaizing powers of guessing. I'm gonna guess that you have a frontmount OEM 6 volt coil and a 12 volt conversion.

1st off, it don't matter electrically which resistor is first or last. But it sure nuff does matter that they are the correct resistance. They don't have to be the same resistance and probably should not.

2nd, resistors should be hooked up in series like flashlight batterys.

3rd, if in fact you do have 2 ballast resistors in series, your going to be burning out your ignition coil before you burn out your ignition points.

4th, not all resistors are ballast resistors.

5th, a 12 to 6 volt converting resistor is generally about 3 ohms. And that is not too critical.

6th, if your 12 volt conversion was done correctly, you should read abut 3 volts (2.5 min, 3.5 max) at the coil terminal with the points closed and 12 volts with the points open. Any other voltage reading gonna cause a whole lotta problems..... ..... Dell

Roger..... ...the 12 to 6 volt converting resistor has many part numbers depending upon where you shop. If you are shoping at Ford/New Holland try this: 8NE10306..... ....Dell

I got a C in mind reading from Prof Dell but I do know the questions

front mount
side mount
six volt coil
twelve volt coil

change any one change the answer

Your mileage may vary
