Have an opportunity to by an 8N from a neighbor for $2175 (in E. TN). No equipment goes with the tractor and from what I have seen on these boards over the past four years, this seems like a reasonable price. Went up to look at it this afternoon and couldn't find the serial # plate - where would it be located? Also - had to jump it off since it had been sitting for several months and it would not run if the jumper cables were disconnected. I think this is probably a case of a bad ground or loose battery terminal connections - any other ideas?

Here's a link to a site that shows you where to look for the s/n. Scroll down a ways.

What Don said may be correct, but I would also offer an alternate possibility. If the thing has not run for months, the battery may be so depleted that it takes more than the gen. can put out (almost like a short when very dead) until you charge it up for a while from some external source. I'd try just charging it for several hours before doing too much thinking.

Kevin,
You might be correct in that the battery is so dead the generator or whatever type of charging system he has on it might not have enough power to keep it going, I was also thinking that, but what made me not put it down was the fact that the tractor did start using jumper cables and if you can do that the battery will still have some juice. Usually when the battery is that dead the engine can't even be started using a jumper. Though usually might not be the case here.

If it doesn't run with the jumpers disconnected then your charging system isn't working. It would run even with the battery dead if the charging system was charging so it looks like you need to take a look there.

Is it possible that for sittingso long with no charge on the battery, that the generator may need to be re-polarized?

You gotta love those Farmall's I've got a 57 Cub loboy.
You will need to use a good charged up battery to keep it running, it won't run off a dead battery.
the ser # is just under the head behind the oil filter, they are a bugger to read.

I'm not ashamed to say I've driven some Farmalls, including my grandfathers'1939, with metal wheels and lugs. The serial number should be on a flat "boss" on the left side of the engine (as sitting in the seat), near the oil filter. A listing by year is on the left side of this discussion board, so wire brush it clean and match it up. As the guys here say "Clean, Brite, and Tight." And I'd check the battery too. Bob in NY
