I know the 9N never came with a tach, but I was wondering, was there ever any aftermarket ones for the 9N? If you were going to add one, would you change to an 8N govenor and add a proofmeter? Or is there perhaps an electronic tach available?

I am rebuilding the govenor and the manual tells me that the correct engine rpm with a wide open throtle is 2200. How do you measure this without a tach?

Recently I saw a tach that was battery powered (not the tractor battery) and you wind a wire around the #1 spark plug to give it a signal. This meter was both a tach and an hour meter. The price was about $30.00. It was made for tractors, therefore it should be weather tight too.

Most of the cheap "SunTune" engine analyzers come with a tach run by an inductive pickup that is placed over a sparkplug wire.

Also, most electronic tachs have a setting that allows for 4,6 or 8 cylinders - that should work if you are looking for one to mount, but is a pretty expensive option just to tune. The SunTune (available at most auto-parts franchises) gives you tach, dwellmeter, ohmeter, etc. for about $40.

If it is 12v you can get a Delco alt. with three prongs. The third prong is for a tach.

I don't know if that alternator tach option would work for the N's, due to the differences of crankshaft pulley diameters in the N engine compared to the intended application of the alternator. Sure, the alternator will spin, and you will get an RPM reading, but I'm almost positive that it wouldn't be accurate. Unless there is some way to calibrate it, that is. Just my $.02, Brian
