I have a brand new Kubota B2710 which is great but i'm seriously considering buying an 8N to replace it. Ever since I saw a broken down one for sale I've been drawn to them. They have more character than my Kubota and they're far less expensive. I have ten acres. I'd use the tractor primarily for cutting grass. I'd like to get a loader for it as well. Am i nuts to want to buy such and old tractor? I'm not a mechanic nor do I have alot of time. If i bought a reconditioned 8n could i expect trouble free use with normal maintanence or is this the type of tractor only the mechanically gifted should buy? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Mr Pat:
Go get the 8-N, you won't be sorry. Here in Michigan a good running N cost $2500 n up. I've run a kabota there nice machine, but lots of $$$. 8-Ns are great to, you just have to learn to work with there limitations and that's no problem. I bought one two years ago $2800 for the N, then, Disk, Yard rake, back blade, Flail Mower. It's been great..... ..... .

Pat: I've had one for a couple years now and am sorry I didn't buy one years before. I really believe that this series of tractors is a testament to the genius of American engineering. It is one of those inventions where everything just came together right. I would submit that the number still in use around the world, as well as the number made is supportive of their reputation. As an engineer, I can really appreciate the elegance of function. I initially wondered why people collect these, or any tractor. Now I'm looking for another (one to look at, one to use- it's a mental disorder). Maybe the answer is on the "Y" chromosome. I don't think that the performance/price can be touched.

my opinion and $1 will still get you a cup of coffee in some places.

As far as cutting grass the 8N's so called limitations don't mean much. Repairs are not a problem. You see all the discussions about repairs due to tractors that were not used for years and people trying to repair them. They are one of the most reliable tractors ever made or they would not still be around 50 yrs. later and still working. I have one over my sons and when my grandchildren have friends over they are drawn to that old "8N" with wonder. The neighbor has a new Kaboto and they don't look twice at it. Maybe because the old "N's" LOOK like a tractor.
Good luck, hope you find one with a front loader that is being used, not sitting in a field and needing repair.

The limitations of the 8N are lack of Live PTO and hydraulics and no power steering. They were designed to be plowing machines, and the other stuff came later. Thus the gear ratios may be a little ungainly. If you are used to those on your Kubota, the 8N might be a little disappointing. Still, they are fun little tractors, easy to work on and parts are available. The value holds pretty well and is on a steady increase.
They are relatively trouble-free if you can keep your cotton-pickin' hands off of the thing. Most problems come when someone tries to "adjust" or modify the tractor to overcome its limitations.
