2N Head Question

I have a 2N that was my papaw's only tractor he ever owned. My plans have always been to restore it but have never got around to it. All items are in tact and sheet metal is straight. This past summer I pulled all sheet metal off and had it sandblasted one day at work. I thought since it was stripped down I ought to look at the head a little closer. I have noticed the past year or so that when I pull it (I only plow a small garden twice per year) the back spark plug will have moisture around it that has a tint of antifreeze color. Have always watched the oil and never seen any coolant in it. I can get a head for under $100 and swap out no problem but would like to know from past experience if I should go into the motor or if this is a common problem that a new head can take care of. Engine runs great and sounds good--worst problem is it sits in shed for weeks at a time without use. I do walk thru and start from time to time but I know it could use exercise on a regular basis. Any suggestions??

Sounds like it's time to get that $100 head. Your's is cracked through the water jacket. It may not be cracked through the other way into the cylinder but if you're leaking coolant out the top, more than likely it's cracked right through. The crack is probably small and you've just not noticed any water in the oil yet.

Most of the time when there's a significant crack from the cylinder or head into the water jacket you'll get compression pressures into the coolant and boil over — not so much from the heat but from the accumulation of air and excess pressure — maybe even before the coolant gets "hot."

I agree. Get a new head. If you don't someday that coolant will leak down into the combustion chamber, then give you a hydraulic lock up when you go to start it, and bam goes the piston, rod, or..... ..... My $.02

Been there, done that. Fortuntely did not break anything.

Fuel can do the same thing in equipment with gravity feed (motorcycles, and etc). Always shut off the fuel cock when not in use.
