Possible reasons for overheating:

Ditto - What everyone else said. Make sure you have BOTH air and water flowing in appropriate volumes (with thermostat in place).

Check your ignition timing. Make sure it's factory spec.

May have a cracked head (hope not). Small cracks may not alter compression test values enough to ID the problem. Sometimes there's gotta be fire in the hole to generate enough pressure to cause heat / combustion gases to escape into the water jacket.

My 48 did that, and I did most of the same things you did before hitting on the real cause.

The problem with mine turned out to be dirt/dust/weed seeds reducing the air flow through the radiator. I just cleaned it out good with compressed air and then water jet and I can't make her overheat. Turns out, for the work I do here, I have to do this about once a season and she stays cool as a cuke.

BTW: put that thermostat back in! It prolongs the life of the engine, and makes it run more efficiently too.

good luck,
Tom

Radiator will want to run with water just covering the fins inside...should be 2-3 inches down to allow for expansion...that is where it wants to be...if it is still forcing out water after it gets to that level...then you really do have a problem...

I learned a lesson about radiators. I took mine out of my 9N and took it to a shop to have it boiled out and cleaned. Brought it back nice and shiney, put it in and still overheated. Cleaned the block, even pulled head and freeze plugs. Still overheated. Pulled radiator and took it to another shop who pulled it apart. Seems first shop gave it a nice coat of paint, or maybe tried to boil it out, but the tubes were plugged. Had it recored and never a problem again.

Oh one other thing, cost of recoring is about the same as a new radiator, your call.

FWIW,

JU

"cost of recoring is about the same as a new radiator".

Your probably right, but I would bet on the quality of a local recore over the quality of a new chinese unit.

Did you flush your block when your radiator was out. Even if you did some of the junk might have broken loose after. I would flush the block again.
I would also run water through the radiator with the hoses off to be sure it is flowing good.
