Recently acquired S/N 298005. Runs OK. Thought I'd do a compression test since she puffs a little blue smoke. Someone did half-baked 12V conversion so she rolls over FAST! Turned cold engine till I got oil pressure, then tested. DRY WET
#1 128 145
#2 132 145
#3 135 145
#4 125 125
Pretty much what I expected, except #4. Think I ouught to re-do test? Any other suggestions? Supposedly, this engine was re-ringed a couple of years ago. Little bit of blue smoke maybe valve guides?
Also, another question. On both the '49 and the 50,the yoke behind the draft control spring is eaten nearly in half by the top link. Was the original top link a smaller diameter? Do you think the new top links could be ground a little for clearance or would this weaken them?

Wow, would love to have those compression numbers.
My 50'8n (282899) on dry test has #1 70, #2 85, #3 90, #4 105. She can plow ok, as long as the grounds been broken before, has a real tough time turning sod especialy with thatch buildup. Engine rebuild this winter.... I suspect your rings are just getting broken in, as stated in another post. Keep an eye on it though...any idea how many hours on the new engine?

Jim, Haven't any idea of hours on this engine. The proofmeter was trashed when I bought the tractor and the fellow I bought it from had owned it for a couple of years but had never done anything to it. Lots of work to do on the old girl. PTO is leaking, needs paint, radiator doesn't look good, but isn't leaking. Probably have to contact Zane soon, since the hydraulics won't do much in draft mode although it seem O.K. in position mode. Somebody put one of the back tires on with the wide side of the rim to the outside which would be alright except the other one is opposite. Lots of fun coming up. DickTN

Your compression is admirable. Don't change anything. Blue smoke is probably oil escaping around the new rings which haven't fully seated yet. Just check oil level regularly.
