Got a replacement starter drive for an 8n and it doesn't want to disengage. It seems like it is staying in gear. Any suggestions

You probably did what I did, turned the starter drive before you put it in the tractor. No biggie, just go ahead and install it. After the engine starts, the internal pawls will disengage and all will be well.

That's not too uncommon. A lot of aftermarket parts and rebuilt parts are poor quality. Remove strart and if it snaps back and will continue to do it if you take it to an auto parts store to have them test it, the problem could be eccentric wear on your ring gear (i.e., the back part of the ring gear's teeth will not be as worn as the front part - mine has it too).

The old starter might not have been fully engaging the whole tooth and that can cause wear on just part of each tooth. The "high spot" left can bind a new starter drive's teeth. If that's the case, you can try reinstalling the new starter trying all the while to keep the drive as far from the ring gear as possile while you tighten the mounting screws. It may only take a couple of thousandths to correct the problem and the new drive will wear down the high spots on the ring gear over time.

If that doesn't work, you will have to split the tractor and replace the ring gear.

A little more information is needed. Is it a positive drive or the old style bendix? Does it stay engaged after the engine starts? It has to be clean and not greased. dave <*)))><

Or are you saying it keeps cranking after the starter button is released. That would be a electrical problem. Probably a stuck solinoid.
