Weak hydraulics

I hate to beat this hydraulic problem thing to death, but I have a problem I haven't seen here.
My 3pt. is very weak on my '43 2N.I had this entire tractor tore down and I cleaned and repaired (I thought). The tractor sat in a barn since 1973
before I bought it. When I opened up the rear diff every thing was coated with a heavy sludge.
I thought I cleaned it all out. Got it all together and everything worked very well-except the 3pt. This was about six months ago. At that time the arms would lift their own weight but no
more. Now it will lift maybe 50 lbs. Is this gradual gain due to crud still in the system, or
do I have other problems. I might add- I did run
diesel through the system for approx 20 min. - twice. I really don't think this is due to wear as
this is a very low hour 2N. I am only the second
owner. It farmed a 15 acre farm fron '43 to '73
and then sat. One more thing- I did open up the side plate and there is only a little bit of turbulance, so I don't think anything major is leaking. I would appreciate advice on this.
Thanks, Steve

Steve,
Did you take the pump out? The small chambers in the pump could be filled with crud, and although the rest of the tractor looks clean, this could be enough for sluggish operation. Prior to unbolting the pump from the bottom of the tractor, remember to separate the internal lift arms from the t-shaped plunger on the pump. There is one bolt on either side of the pump that holds down 2 chambers each. Unbolt and remove the springs and other pieces and clean thoroughly. Reassemble in reverse order. While everything is apart, you may want to change the safety valve and/or the ram piston. Both are easy and cheap fixes and will make a world of difference in the hydraulic operation.

It could be the lift linkage going to the control valve. Could have come off for some reason. Had this same kind symptom after I broke a coupler and it whacked the lift linkage away from the valve on one side.

I have recently done a significant teardown on my 2N/8N hybrid. The 3 point was leaking down horribly and while I had the rear end torn down I replaced the lift cylinder and pistion. In addition to all the other stuff that I found on tear down I found the sludge to also contain metal particles. I cleaned all the cast compartments from front to rear and I was stunned to see all the metal in the bottom of the catch pan. This made me pay close attention to moving parts and begin to replace things.

Dropping the pump isn't a real big deal. You may want to do that to inspect for wear and replace the control and relief valve. Having this out will let you get free access to all the crevices that the goop can collect in around the pump too. I was glad I did all this. Lift works well now and I have a lot more confidence about being able to fix the tractor as a whole.

There are only two major components to the system: a pump and a piston/cylinder. The pump should put out 1500 lbs of pressure at the port at the corner of the pump housing. If it's not, rebuild or replace the pump. If it is, check the cylinder/piston for leakage. If you don't see any major fluid leakage from above when you look inside, I'd go with a weak or damaged pump(maybe a stuck or restricted valve or a cracked housing or worn pump parts)

I'll go with a pressure relief valve stuck open. The "metal particles" and / or sludge could have lodged in the valve seat and I don't care what your pump puts out for psi, the lift arms won't have any power, another sign of this is the amount of turbulance seen through the side ports. Easy and cheap to replace without tearing the tractor cover down again.
