if it is not a strapped alt and it is charging but the bat drains when switch is turned off you have backfeed to alt that is draining the batt you can get a safety shut off they use on stationary power units put it in an oil line and run your wire from alt to batt thru 2 of the terminals this will shut the back flow off when switch is off got mine at auto zone about15.00 bucks

Part of the joy of twelve volt conversions is there are so many ways to do it. Some of them even work.

Without more information about how the conversion was done and what the trouble is Dell's suggestion below is as good as any--get the alternator checked.

What does the ammeter read runing and at rest? Does the battery hold a charge? Is there a current drain somewhere? Is it a one wire alternator that isn't getting reved enough to excite it? So many possibilities so little information.

Your mileage may vary

Without knowing how the conversion was done, it's tough to say, but my first thought is that the alternator is not being "excited" at high enough rpm to start the charging cycle. Dell will probably chime in shortly and provide the fix.

Phill..... ...what bg sez..... ..and..... .
Take the 12 volt alternator into any autoparts store and have a "freebie" alternator check. Thats where I'd start. The commonly used Delco 10-SI 12 volt alternator has built-in voltage regulator. Then assuming your 12 volt battery is good and charged, make certain all your big battery cable connections are clean, bright, and tight..... .....Dell

would a check at the battery while running w/a volt ohm meter tell me if the alt is good?

Phil..... ...ya said "charging problems", what is so difficult about understanding "freebie" alternator check? ..... .....respectfully, Dell
