I use the mighty 8N in the bush a lot, on rough ground and in very tight quarters. I just did it again. Gently bumped a tree with the front of the hood. Once again, I put the fan through the rad. This is probably the 4th or 5th time its happened.
How much clearance is normally between the fan and rad?

That radiator is just a tad bit cheaper than a bumper.. might be time to buy / build one.

My new radiator cost about twice what my new bumper cost.

It was a lot easier to install too!

Man..... ..getts yer eyeballs checked before the tractor police pulls yer license.
'Course, ya can always put a frontbumper on, 'atts whatt the're made fer, clumbsey drivers. (grin)

Usually there is about 1/2" clearance between radiator and fanblades.

Check your frontaxle kingpin (under radiator) jackitt up and wiggle the axle stuff around. Driving over ruff ground gonnna bump alotta stuff together..... ...Dell

Might be a good time for a bumper/brush gaurd on the front end. I can take a look at mine and see how far it is away. Funny that one has been in there 50+ years and not a scratch? My truck is on the 3 rd one and nothing has hit it? Mark H.

Probably 20 years ago I was working the 8N in the woodlot and a stick poked up into the fan and forced a blade forward into the radiator. Stopped the fan dead, imbedded in the fins. Water and antifreeze squirtin out everywhere. I got the radiator off--the hardest part was getting the fan blade out of the fins--and I started straightening fins and tubes. Some of the tubes were cut off completely, probably 3 or 4 of them, some just had holes in them. I started cutting fins away from the broken tubes, enough to work on the tubes; then I crimped the bad tubes over, and started soldering them off. Probably 1/2 hour later I had a leak free radiator. Cooling capacity may be reduced some but I never notice and never overheat. You can still see where the blade sliced into the core; it looks like someone took an axe to it.
BTW, brass (or copper) radiators solder nice, don't think it would work on aluminum car radiators.

Henry Ford never intended this tractor to do what it gets used for in the bush (fall and winter). Firewood and logging in rocky country. The general plan is to drive the 8N to where the wood is and then hopefully get the load close enough to where the Dexta can reach it with a chain if (when) it gets stuck.
I also don't like the look of a bumper on this tractor (spoils the lines!:-)) But repairing and replacing radiators is a pain too.
My fan is seems to he a quarter inch from the rad.
Maybe I just need a new (unbent) fan. Thanks for the input. I love this little tractor. 8Ndexta Ger
