2N Died and Won't Restart

Have a 2N with 6V, front mount distributor system. I was out cutting grass this afternoon and after about 45 minutes the tractor just died. No warning before it stopped. It's now 2 hours later and the tractor won't start. I'm aware of the common problem with a bad coil that after about an hour of operation that the coil heats up and the tractor dies. But I thought that after the coil cooled down, it's normal function returned and the tractor would then start. Am I mistaken about this? Is it worth it to try a new coil? I have had no starting problems prior to this occurrence. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Ron

Quickest way to determine what is wrong is to do some voltage measurements. Turn on the key and measure the voltage at the top of the coil. You should see battery voltage if the points are open and about 3.5 volts if the points are closed. If the voltage is zero, you have a problem between the battery and the coil (switch, resistor, wire). If the voltages check as described above, check to see if you have a spark at the plugs. If not, you have a problem with the coil or distributor (points, condensor, rotor, cap). If you have a good spark at the plugs, then I would look for a fuel problem. You are right, the common symptom for a shorted coil is that it will "heal" itself when it cools, but that is not 100%. It can fail and not "heal" when it cools so make no assumptions, make measurements.

Hey - you probably flooded it after it shut down. Let it sit with the fuel shut off for a while and try it.

Ron,

Do you have spark at the plugs? Could it be a fuel problem? It no spark, it could be a broken wire or connection or slipped points.

Danny
