what is the angle iron piece across the top of the transmission for? i have never seen anything like it before. it apears to be bolted on with some sort of brackets.

Mark,

The iron piece mounted to the tranny was a support for the homemade cordwood saw that granddad made. The ends of the table bolted to the angled piece. This kept the table firmly supported. Wish I had a pic to show ya. Hard to explain. I still have the saw table but can't find the saw blade.

This is me back in the early 50's before we had colour pics. This pic is me standing in our front yard, with a toy wooden locomotive. I still have the locomotive, although it's not in the shape it was back when this pic was taken... but neither am I. A friend of my family did a nice oil painting of this pose, which hangs over my bed to this day. It has colour.
