I have a 9n and my bro has an 8n. I always open my gas 'shut off valve' all the way. My brother tells me that on his 8n, he opens it only one full turn. Then when working the field and he runs short of fuel, he opens the valve all the way and has enough fuel to get his tractor back to the barn. Similar to a motorcycle shut off valve system. I haven't tried that yet, but come spring when I get her out of the barn, I'll check to see if it works for me.

Instructions on the 8N fuel shutoff valve stamped on the valve wheel say reserve is two full turns open, reserve all the way open. Ditto these instructions in 47 thru 52 owners manuals

Here's a picture of the OEM 9/2N fuel valve. You can see how the reserve function works. The 8N valve is similar in theory, but has a valve which functions on a threaded shaft with a large round turning disc, usually stamped with the instructions. Valves are sometimes replaced, so what you have may not be original or even a reserve-type valve. third party image

Mine must be an 'after market' or 8n valve cause it is a large disk with threads. Haven't taken it out of tank, but would be curious to see if if it has the dual inlets as per your picture. thanks..Ron

He's right on the 8N. I'm not sure about the 9.
