If the fuzz pulled you over for what seemed like too heavy a load they would look inside the drivers door for the GVW of the truck. So that would tell you what the max for the truck and camper or any weight on the truck is. There may also be another number for the maximum GVW of the truck and trailer. If you are planning on testing the limits it's best to get a 3/4 ton with bigger brakes and floating rear axels. BC Mike C

I went and looked at our 78 Chev 3/4 ton, it's on the door frame opening near the latch. It says 8400 GVWR. Don't know what the R is for. Truck ways about 5300 so that lets me put on 3100 which seems about right, but the gooseneck trailer weighs 5500 empty, add 5 to 6000 for a load of hay and the whole thing weighs a lot more than the GVWR. So I don't know how they get the total truck and trailer GVW. Except I guess the hitch weight of the gooseneck should not exceed 3100.

You are correct, the GVWR(rating) is the amount the vehicle by itself is rated to. A combined (GCVWR) would be the vehicle and a trailer weight rating, while making sure the tongue weight does not exceed the GVWR. If you are planning to pull anything over 3,500 lbs, many states require trailer brakes, if not required it is a good idea, even 3/4 ton and larger trucks are not designed to regularily stop loads in excess of the GVWR.

If you have an owners manual, look in it.

The information may be on the door of the truck. I have towed a te 20 with my mazda 4 cylinder. Only towed it about 5 miles really slow. Got a good hitch and air shocks. Don't try this your self it could be a health hazard.

No, in all seriousness & all kidding aside, Get a Ford & you wont have to worry about it. He jokingly says as he heads out the door to figure out why this d--- Ford wont run right. Vaccum leak some where. I don't tow with anything smaller than a 3/4 ton truck. The trick isn't in getting the load rolling it is in stopping it.
