1940 9N value? How large finishing deck?

Am thinking of purchasing a 1940 9N. Was wondering what its value might be in good condition. Starts right up, runs quiet and smooth.
Also how large a finishing deck it could handle. I am looking for something to make quick work of a 3 acre (level, few trees) yard. Is this tractor suitable? Thanks.
Richard

My 2N runs a 6-foot finish mower without any trouble. However, it would be nice to have the additional forward gear that the 8N has (most times I could mow faster than the 2N will go in second).

I think these guys are right on the value, it's hard to pinpoint but I would guess in the $2000.00 range. Myself, I like a 6 foot finish mower. I run two wheels on the cut grass so I only have two running on the uncut grass. That cuts down the width of cut to about 5 feet anyway. Also if you get into tough cutting just hold over more.

Richard,
My 47 2N is nearly identical to the 9N you are looking at. Assuming that it runs good and looks reasonably good the going price in central Iowa is anywhere from $2000-$3000.

The N's will handle a 5' finish mower just fine even on hilly terrain. On your open flat 3 acres it should be a breeze. Follow BG's advice and get an ORC, and I would also recommend a Zane Thang too. It saves looking back all the time to see if the mower is coming up.

Value is subjective: based on location, supply, condition, features, originality, how bad you want it. Generally 9N's are selling for anywhere from $1000-3000 in my area(eastern NC). As you can see that's quite a range, based on the above criteria.

The 9N should handle a 5-foot finishing mower. Be aware that with the 3-speed transmission, your ground speed may be hard to calibrate with the mower's cutting ability. You should use an over-running coupler on the PTO shaft to prevent the mower's momentum from driving the tractor forward(this happens when you nash the clutch pedal...the tractor keeps driving from the pto shaft end.)

The 9N also has no position control, so with a finishing mower, you'd have to rely on the gauge wheels for the level of the cut. With a bush-hog, you'd need limiter chains or a Zane-Thang to set the cutting level.

Jim,Scott,Mike and BG, Thanks for your replies. I went ahead and bought the 1940 9n today. It already had the over running coupler, a new radiator, been converted to 12v (new alternator, battery etc.) Also the hydralics have been recently rebuilt and the motor rebuilt several years ago. Did not come with any implements just a tow bar. Again thanks for all the info.

Richard
