Need information as to which is better a 9n or 8n and what is the difference between them as far as drawbacks or limitations, which is best for general farm work and relaibility.

thanks in advance AL

Normally, the later model the tractor the happier you will be with it. To me condition is more important that model year since the differences are comparatively small. I would go with a 9/2n in good shape over a 8n basket case price being equivelent.

Your mileage may vary

All else being equal the 8N has a couple of advantages over a 9/2N. The brakes both on the same side, 4 speed transmission, and position control for the 3pt. are the most important.

However the reliablility of the 2 should be the same since they share most of the mechanicals from the transmission forward.

There was a design change on the 8N in about 1950 or so-the distributor was moved to the side from the front. Some say that this is easier to work on. Personally I like being able to remove the distributor and put it on the workbench when I have to change points (remember-this is only my PERSONAL opinion).

The 9/2N can have position control with an add on device called the Zane Thang. In my opinion this makes the 8N's and 9/2N's pretty much equal since brake location and a 4 speed transmission are not important to me.

What kind of farm work are you looking at? The N's do have some limitations and may not be suitable for some heavy work.

8N's are usually slightly more valuable than the 9N/2N although I wouldn't give up my 1947 2N for anything....

Just some light farm work, mowing pasture, making some hay. Can a loader and backhoe be used with the 8n. AL

As far as the loader goes-maybe. I have a loader for mine that I only put on when I need it. If I had to use it much at all I would look at a heavier tractor. The loader does make the N somewhat unpleasant to steer. Not a big deal if you only use it occasionally for light work. Mowing with a loader on would not be fun at all.

An NAA or thousand series tractor might be a better choice for a very small initial price increase.

I don't have any experience with a backhoe so I can't help you there.
