After browsing the archives on this discussion board concerning motor oil, I decided that I want to switch from ND 30 wt. to 10 W 30 HD. Would use of this product be better than weining off the ND single weight? Has anyone on this thread ever used it before? Is there any downside? All replys greatly appreciated!!

I was given a couple free cases of Castrol 5W-30.
I used to use TSC brand straight non-detergent 30wt. in my '51 8N.
With the straight 30, I had about 5-10 psi oil pressure.
With the Castrol, I average 20-25 psi.
I can't explain it, don't recommend it, this has simply been my experience with it.

'Gunk' is the brand name and it is a fluid that you pour in the crankcase. You run the engine for 10 minutes and then change the oil normally.
I have never used a brand name cleaner, but have added a quart of kero to the crankcase, which I suspect is one of the main ingredients in the Gunk and other engine flushes.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT, but I have even done a full crankcase of kero with a new filter and run for 1 minute on a dead cold engine. Drain and put another new filter on and fill with oil. I have seen kero come out completely black in 1 minute doing this. As I stated though I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS!!!

I agree with Salmoneye, I done this 30 years ago on a 65 Chrysler I had , after that I had nothing but problems, used oil almost as fast as I could put it in, cleaned everything to good, never again. Stan

If you have been using non-detergent motor oil for some time keep using it until you need to rebuild the engine. All the deposits from the oil have built up taking up slack in everything. If you change to high-detergent now it will clean all that off and you could start having all kinds of problems. Once an overhaul is needed you can use about anything you want, and like the other post said keep it clean and full.

I've always been told to stick with the same oil until a overhaul.I understand it has to do with breaking in, etc. Once the block is re-sleeved, a change in viscosity is less likely to promote warp or fracturing in the block itself as well as valve seating, ring and compression problems. Any other thoughts from the forum ?

You can change brands, viscosity and any thing else you want. A lot of people change viscosity with the seasons. It's recommended in just about any operators manual I've ever read. The most important things about motor oil are to keep it full and keep it clean!
