Some of the early 8Ns do not have removable filter media those are the ones like the 2Ns then you take the unit out to clean it. Mark H.

Your wife's kitchen sink must me a mess. All kidding aside, I am amazed that you are able to clean and paint those 50 year old parts to look like new. Ron

Hi Mark,
You're right. I was thinking only of my '51 8N when I responded.
I have gotten into one like your picture. I always figure that if it was assembled, I can take it apart. I just don't always get it back together as pretty as it was.
See if there aren't some stamped tabs or an internal wire ring inside holding it together.
Certainly don't risk destroying anything as nice looking as you have that one looking.

I never found a way to get it open? It also was not rolled like a lot of the 8Ns are it is just kind of smashed up in there? I have another one off a 5o 8N just like it to clean and it has the screen on the top that goes behind the grill the screen comes off but the insides are sealed. I just soak them in the dip tank for a day, drain then use that castrol cleaner and hot water works great. You do not get the outsides like that with the cleaner, that is what the wire wheel dose on the bench grinder. Mark H.

I have been cleaning the mesh in my '51 8N for close to 50 years (next spring), I'm 59.
Pull it out. It is a rolled up mesh held together with a wire pin. Wash it out with a solvent (I grew up using gasoline) Dry it and then re-roll it to fit. A little trick I use is to start it around the tube sticking down from the air filter when the cup is off. Then just roll it carefully, pin it and stuff it back in. You might just find two rolls in there, one above the other.

Best way to do it is un-bolt the air cleaner and pour Purple Castrol Cleaner into the mesh let soke wash out with hot water and repeat till clean then put it back on. Mark H.

I've cleaned mine with solvent in a spray bottle ( bug sprayer.. pump style ).. use the lower pan to catch the drippings. Wipe clean.. let air dry, refill with oil. ( The itf-04 manual says to clean them with solvent.,, etc. )

I havn't heard of a replacement being available for the mesh material.. but they look awfully close the the metal scrubbies that you use at the kitchen sink...

Pull the mess out and unwind it and wash it in kerosene or varsol. Wrap it back up and stuff it back in. There's an outfit in NJ that can supply the knitted wire mesh by the yard or mile.
