I am needing to rebuild the front end on my 48 8N, the steering box included. Ive read the manual, but it does not tell you what the normal parts to replace are when rebuilding. I would like to order all the bushings, seals, bearing in advance so as to avoid havin it apart for an extended period of time. It seems as I would need a pivot pin bushing, and spindle bushings for the front but I am unclear what the normal wearing parts are for the steering gear. The tractor has seen much abuse before I got it and whatever I fix seems to need the whole nine yards. Also the spindles are poking up out of the housings, I assume due to shot bushing and the steering stops are rubbing and starting to wear. Is the fatal for the spindle housings or the spindles? Thanks for the help, Andy

IT'S ME AGAIN. IF YOUR SPINDLE UPRIGHT SHAFTS ARE WORN VERY BAD THEY CAN BE REPAIRED. I WORK IN A MACHINE SHOP AND HAVE REPAIRED MANY SPINDLES OVER THE YEARS. WE NORMALY WELD UP WORN SURFACE,(WARPS THE DICKENS OUT OF THEM) THEN STRAIGHTEN THEM AND MACHINE BACK TO ORIGIONAL SIZE. SINCE THE 8N SPINDLE BUSHINGS ARE STEEL I HAVE BRAZED UP THE SPINDLE AND REMACHINED . THEY SEEM TO LAST VERY WELL AND HAVE NEVER HAD A COMPLAINT.

I'VE JUST REBUILT MY FRONT END. I PUT BUSHING IN CENTER OF AXLE, SPINDLE BUSHINGS,NEW SEAL IN TOP OF SPINDLE JUST UNDER STEERING ARM, NEW WHEEL BEARINGS AND SEALS , PLUS THRUST BEARING THAT GOES ON BOTTOM OF SPINDLE UPRIGHT SECTION ,WHICH IS PROBABLY WHY YOUR SPINDLES ARE STICKING UP TO HIGH. I NEED NEW RADIUS ROD PINS ALSO.
I JUST PURCHASED 2N/8N/9N MANUALS ON CD OFF EBAY. IT WILL HAVE PARTS BOOK ON THAT WITH ALL PART NUMBERS AND DRAWINGS TO SHOW WHAT YOU NEED AND WHERE THEY GO. IT COST 19.95 AND WELL WORTH IT. HOPE THIS HELPS

The bearings are shot. You need new bushings AND upper and lower bearings. The only way to see if the spindle housings and spindles are shot is to take it apart. Hopefully, the bearings and bushings took the brunt of the wear. The bushings can be a booger-bear to remove unless you have or make a special tool. There is a machined surface inside the spindle housing tube at the top and bottom that looks like a bushing, but it won't come out.(Don't ask)My tractor had some old bushings that were inside the tube.Apparently the previous mechanic couldn't get them out, so he drove them on in.
Once you have the old bushings out, you'll need to closely inspect the place where they go and see if the new ones will slide in. If they drop in easily, it's pretty worn. They should be a tight fit and possibly require the housing be honed a little to install them.
