Implement storage ideas...?

Hey guys,

I've been pondering shed layouts the last couple of weeks. I plan to park my 9N, 6'rock rake, 4' woods mower, 5' back blade, 5'box blade, 4' cultivator & PHD. It would be nice to stash the lawn mower & tiller too.

Any bright ideas to save on floor space? Anyone out there using an I-beam trolley to hang implements.

TIA, Ken

Hi Ken,

I build a metal frame with casters for each implement. I drop the implement onto the frame and roll it off someplace out of the way. I can move anything in the storage barn easily if it is in my way. I have done this with back blade, tiller, even my 3 pt backhoe attachment. The big added benefit is that it is much easier to hook up any 3 pt attachment if it is easily moves; no more struggles to move it a 1/2 inch to get the pins to line up. I can't imagine going back to doing it the old way.

I've converted an old pallet jack into a carry-all and use pallets to store and move my implements around on. I have a long set of shelves built from 4x4 posts and 2x12's that I use to stack implements and other items on to save some space. Works great.

Many places have used warehouse equipment dealers , where you could possibly pick up a set of warehouse racking like they use in places like Sam's CLub, Home Depot, etc. At going out of business sales I've seen them go for $200 a section.

THe engine installation place I worked at a few years back did this to store core engines and it saved a LOT of space. We had an engine hoist we used until they finally got us a forklift to unload from the trucks who delivered to us. Your boom pole used carefully should do almost as well.

For sheds, look at Link and you might get some ideas on cheap storage. Depending on where you are there may be some dealers selling something like those. I can't build in wood for what one costs up here.

I put big tires on my engine hoist and roll and stack with it. Seems like you could build you a HD shelf, too, where you could raise your hydraulics and back in your box blade, for example, above your mower. And the back blade above the rake...etc.

If you have a boom you can double stack some implements. The ones for frequent use go on the ground for easy hookup and the once a year or infrequent stuff goes on a rack above via boom pole. bring it down when needed.

I built a 2nd level in my shop that is 16' wide by 6' deep by 40 inches tall. The implements store are stored under it and shelving is on top. I access the upper portion via a set of stairs and keep all my stuff that I don't use often but don't dare throw out up there.
