I was checking the serial numbers page on this site and discovered that #89888 was the number that they say began the 42 model. I then went to my trusty "I&T" shop manual and discovered that '42 model began with #88934. So depending where 904 owners who fall between those numbers look they really don't know for sure whether they own a 41 or a 42 model.

Here's an even better one: I bought a book called Ford Tractor Data Book. In there the author claims that 9N's were built into 1943 concurrently with 2N's. According to him, a person with a serial number between 99003 and 105xxx wouldn't really be able to tell if he had a 9N or a 2N. Lotta speculation I think. Also, I've seen the 9N/2N cutoff number quoted as 99046 rather than 99003. I guess it really doesn't matter.

Maybe one number refers to the '42 production year (some of which were probably manufactured late in '41), while the other refers to when the tractors were actually built. I know, for example, that the low-numbered NAAs were made in '52 for the '53 model year.
