I thought it was interesting that no post from TX were made to either of the OT post that I saw. Texas has some very punitive hunting laws and attitudes about hunters poaching, trespassing, shooting accross other's property, and over roadways. Would have cost this elder gentleman about $3000 plus would have confiscated his chair, his house, his shotgun and anything else of value used in the commission of this crime. We have few hunting accidents in TX. And we don't allow deer hunting with shotguns, only centerfire rifles...and I hunt out near Jeff Who?...Jimbo TX

You are wrong, there is no law that says you can not hunt with a shotgun. You can hunt deer with a shotgun all day long in Texas if that is what you want to do.

I think Texans understand guns and liberty and responsibility a little better than most folks. It's part of their heritage, not so far far removed from the Alamo. Don't Mess with Texas!

The old man should pony up for all costs involved in this incident. The young girl should then be allowed to fire a couple of shots at the old man sitting in his chair from 200 yards but only if she thinks he looks like a deer.

At 89, someone should check him for some dementia. Who knows what else may look like a deer.

...to start another war, but why doesn't the 89-year old guy pay for the damages? Why should the hunters have to bail him out?

Let the old coot pay for everything. let the hunting community pay for a hunting refresher course, lobbyists for legislation for new standards, eyesight testing, and basics such as diagrams showing the difference between two horses and rider vs. a deer.

Then, add another diagram showing the difference between a bull moose and a duck, the difference between a coyote and raccoon and so on, and so forth. No mistakes. 100% score and you git your gun.

If he is so stupid to point a gun in the dierection of a house and shoot two horses and a rider, they should show him the barrel end of his gun up where the sun don't shine. Dick Hamilton

I believe the story was that the little girl was riding one horse while leading another on a rope.

Only one horse got shot, the one the girl was riding. The slug missed her leg by just inches.

I don't think anyone is making the story bigger.

Ayuh
The old man should step up and do what's right.

If he don't though it's good P.R. for the hunting community to help out.

Shows we care and are willing to take responsability for the actions of one of our own.

The antis will use these incidents to the best of their abilities to push their agenda so's we got to stick together and look at the big picture.

his gun, his farm, his first-born granddaughter, his old Ford truck and tractor, his bank account, his false teeth, before I'd let him skate on this one. Old is one thing, stupid is another....

I hope you didn't misunderstand me.

I don't think the old man should skate.

But if he can't or won't do the right thing it's not such a bad idea for the rest of us hunters to step up. It makes a much better impression to the fence sitters if we take reponsibilty up front rather then have it come to a messy, finger pointing, name calling, lawyer profiting court battle.

No matter what happens to the old man he's still going to be stupid. We got to think of it as lookin out for ourselves.

Greg,
Let Me state first(I'm not blasting you). What you stated is what the gun banning crowd wants (all gun owners to pay for a few stupid people). Just because some idiot goes off with a fully automatic or even a semi-auto military look- alike rifle they want everybody to pay. I read an article in the AMA journal that doctors kill more people per year than guns. More people are killed in cars per day than gun shot wounds. Who pays for all of these? We do. Higher insurance rates. Its time for these stupid people to take what they got coming and not to expect us to bail them out. What ever happen to the "know what you are shooting at before you pull the trigger" rule.

Respectfully,

Jim

What floored me was the cavalier attitude that if we buy the girl a new horse, everything will be okay. What if the girl had gotten shot. Do we buy the parents a new child?

The old guy obviously has some assets. Before I'd let someone else bail him out, I'd nail him to the wall and take everything he has. He had a choice to shoot or not. He may even be senile, but that still doesn't obviate his personal responsibilty. What kind of hunter sits and a porch and shoots at something 200 yards away? A girl on a white horse, leading another horse sure doesn't look like a deer silhouette....at least not to me. Sounds more like Jerry Clower's story about Uncle Versie's mule.
