bg: i tried the manifold changed all studs and nuts and gasket, made two rounds in pasture with bush-hog and as usual started missing, seems like two cylinders and backfiring. the temperature was about 160 degrees. every time ive tried something i was only able to make a couple of rounds in the pasture. i changed the condensor and was able to make about 8 or nine rounds, i thought i had it. the temp ran about 175-180 , then the same thing happened. sometime the cylinders would hit sometime they would'nt. it idles good. the distributator is a frount mount.

Ricky..... .....sounds like you have all the indications of a bad square frontmount ignition coil. I know you said you replaced it. They're known for being bad right outta the new box. Replace it.

You should know that the frontmount N's have 2 time/heat related problems and they "cure" themselves overnight. 1) gunked up ignition switch, usually takes about 15 mins to show up
2) bad frontmount coil usually takes about 45-60 mins to show up. Unfortunately, there is no eazy shadetree mechanic test for this bad ignition coil except by experience..... ....Dell

I be agreein' wid Dell. You've eliminated the manifold leak, so that leaves the classic coil problem. I wouldn't trust Grandpa's toggle switch. I'd be puttin' in a keyswitch, if for nuttin' else but safety.

Sounds like ignition problems, namely, coil or ignition switch. Next time it happens, jumper around the ignition switch and see if that helps. That will eliminate one variable. My $.02

Tim: the ignition switch was removed a long time ago and a toggle switch was installed by my grandfather. but i did try to jump across it and it did no good. thanks anyway. i don't know what else to try. i used it last month bush-hogging with great success. ive checked the manifold for air bypass. new coil, new plugs. i even checked the compression when it was still running bad all cylinders had about 85 psi. on them.

I had something similar - a carb rebuild seems to have cleared it up. For a simple fix try blowing out the carb jets with compressed air - might get it.

Bob: what i can't understand is why it has to get hot to start acting up. seems like it would do it all the time.
thanks:

Ricky;
I had a similair problem on my military jeep.
I had a very good mechanic help me and he thought it was carburetor problem.
I replaced distributor, carburetor, plugs, more than once.(I have lots of spare parts).
The sparkplug wires were graphite filled and burned inside. I replaced them with copper and problem disappeared. The motor ran great when it was cold.
Be sure and let us know what the solution ends up solving the problem.
Jim

OK then, another idea(s). Do you have a steel gas line that comes from the sediment bowel to the carb. If so if it's too close to the head, you could be causing vapor lock in that line, hence when it gets hot you don't have adequate fuel supply. I assume you have 6 volts. Next time it balks, check the voltage to the coil. Points closed should read 4-4.5 volts. Anything less means a bad resister or possibly bad wiring, both of which I guess could give you problems after they heat up.
