8n Wiring Problem

Starter switch had been by-passed on a recently purchased '49 8n. A new switch was installed along with a new wiring harness. All wires were checked with a tester to insure proper application. Problem is, the starter switch still won't start the tractor. Tractor can be started by by-passing the solenoid. Solenoid was also replaced. Figure the cause is in the wiring.
Any ideas?

Check the terminal on back of the starter relay. If you do not have 6 volts there, then you have the wrong relay. If you have 6 volts there then grounding this terminal should engage the relay. If grounding this terminal on the relay starts the tractor, then the new switch is not grounding the wire properly when engaged.

Rick, I had a very similiar problem with my 48 8N.
As you are aware I'm sure the old Ford (even cars) used a POSITIVE grounding system. What I found out was my starter switch on transmission top of was not making a good ground contact,I took it all apart and cleaned it up and it worked great and still is. Good luck, our temp today was -10 with a 40 wind chill the old 8N fired off in about 2 revs.
