Burt,
My son rebuilt the 50 for FFA and kept good records on everything. He didn't always shop long and hard for the parts so his prices may be a little high. He didn't spare any cost on trying to get original (or close to) whenever possible. The tractor was completely rebuilt....everything. I think the total bill was about US$4000. I really don't understand why these little tractors aren't worth more than the 2000-2500 that you usually see listed as their value. Just try to buy a lawn tractor these days!

I paid $2100 for 1948. The motor was professionally rebuilt from the ground up just prior to me buying it. It runs like new!! At the time everything on the tractor worked but I didn't realize how worn everything was. Since buying the tractor (most of this includes labor because I am not mechanically inclined - I am an architect and more comfortable with static forms) I have spent approximately the following: steering completely rebuilt ($250), new steering wheel ($60?), new governor ($250), new starter and drive ($180), new clutch ($200), new radiator, shroud, hose and thermostat ($225?), 4 new tires ($350), new brakes and axle repair ($250), hydraulic lift repair ($200), battery ($45), and misc bits and pieces ($75). That totals (tractor and repairs) about $3935.....The cost of a 800 or 4000 series in OK condition. But, my 48 is mechanically very sound...not much left to fix except the paint and sheet metal. Mechanically I think it is good to go for the remainder of my life (I am 52). I would probably have to rebuild the 800 or 4000 plus misc repairs. It is still about the cheapest
way to go, easy to fix (or have repaired) and a classic archetype to boot. I am satisfied.

I bought my 52 8N seven years ago for $1600. I have put no more than $300 since I bought it. I usually spend a few dollars on it every now and them not because the 8N needs it, it's because I needed to do it, for me.

Burt,
I would guess that I have about $2500 in my rebuild/repaint. That includes new tires (both turf for summer and bar for winter) but does not include implements such as the finish mower or back blade. It gives me a tractor that always starts no matter how cold, always runs strong, and will probably last me the rest of my life.

I'm sure that I have more wrapped up in the tractor than I could ever sell it for. However I also have a tractor that is as dependable as most new ones. So put it in that perspecive if I have $5000 in my tractor and it works as well and does everything that a $10,000 new one could do I'm still money ahead. And besides-N's are just plain fun. That is worth something to me too.

Posted by 9n141 on December 19, 2002 at 17:47:30 from (64.235.198.76):

Prices in Canadian funds (US= aprox 66% of Canadian i.e. $1.00 CAN =$0.66 or $1.50 CAN=$1.00 US ), rings $155.,rod bearings $57, main bearings set $75, grind crank 20 th $135,gasket set etc $61 TOTAL to here $485. 2 valves $20,manifold $120, tune up kit $25, oil pump $178,muffler $26,coil $26,carb overhaul $52,dist cap $15, batt. $60, fluids & filter $100, misc $100 now we are up to $1200 grand total to here. Add from parts in stock Sherman O/U , engine crank, under slung drawbar, tool box , the complete tractor! The good news all other parts very good i.e. rad, hydr.,3pt, pto, gas tank, trans ,clutch, brakes, steering, sheet metal with script, tires& rims very, very good. Labour aprox. 50 hours. This has brought it up to a good reliable & usable tractor. No extra cleaning done or painting. I hope this helps others with their dec. It would be real helpful to me & others if the board members would put aprox. values on the tractor, the Sherman, & other parts used. Thank you BURT.

Burt, I never tallied up what I spent on my 48. I am afraid to know just how much it did cost me. I have it all recorded, Im just afraid to know. Probably 2 times as much as I could sell it for even without labor. Dave <*)))><
