Crankshaft pulley spinning

My crankshaft pulley was wobbling and now has stopped turning. I haven't pulled the front assembly off to see, but feeling around it feels like the pulley has worn itself free from the shaft. The bolt is still intact. Does this sound possible, and what might I encounter when I pull the front end off? Thanks

this is a time saving method to fix the problem- remove hood from tractor, in the middle of the front end below the radiator, there is a hole through the axle directly in line with the pulley bolt, given you have a slotted bolt or hex bolt - you can put 15/16 short socket on the bolt going between the axle and the motor, put socket on bolt take a half inch extension put it throught the hole in the axle preferrably using a 1/2" impact wrench, either remove and inspect the bolt or try tightening the bolt first this may solve the problem if you do not have a hex or slotted bolt, use a screwdriver or screwdriver socket. if you do have a messed up key then you have to remove the front end

Rick,

My '48 8N had the same problem. I have the front hydraulic pump that runs off the pully. As Ken said, it has a round slotted bolt that had loosened on mine as well as stripping the last 1/4" of threads off the bolt. I had to take the loader off, take the hood off, drain the raditor, disconnect the radius rod on one side and the tie rod. Block up under the oil pan. Then take out the 6 or 8 bolts that hold the front end on the engine. My crank was fine, so I also replaced the slotted bolt with a hex head bolt. If you don't have a loader on the front with the front hydrualic pump, you may can retighten or replace the bolt without taking the front off.

On mine, if you don't count the time taking the loader off/back on, I spent about 3-4 hours to swing the front end around and replace the bolt. It was not nearly as hard as I expected.

Good luck!
Danny

Rick, same thing happened to me a few months ago. Pulley was "free-wheeling". Turns out that the large cap-screw/bolt had worked its way out, and the pulley had came off its "key". Unfortunately for me, I had to swing the front-end of the tractor around as described on pages 24 & 25 of the F-04 manual. Had to take off the hood (which for me meant draining the radiator), supporting the engine with a jack, remove a tie rod, unbolt the axle support, swing the front-end around, etc. Once I did that, I could get to the pulley to remove it and re-align it on the "key". My key and pulley was not damaged, so I just guided it back on, then replaced the bolt. This time I put a hex-head bolt on mine instead of the slotted cap screw that was there previously and tightened it down good. I am an amateur at all this, but I was able to do this job myself. Took me a couple of evenings doing it though. I work slow and alone usually. Hope this helps.

The pulley hub has a key way that will sometimes wear off or was possibly replaced with the wrong size or the pulley bolt has backed off and released it from the key. If that is all then you can replace the key and torque up the bolt. Let's hope it didn't tear up the crankshaft. You can buy a new pulley/hub. If the crank is damaged to much you may have to weld the pulley on and worry about it on the next overhaul.
