Evil Steve, Sorry if I got a little bombastic.I do that now and the,(you couldn't hear my fist hitting the table LOL) This whole issue of original colors is bugging me. I wish I could say what that color was from memory But we had a JD B and a 60. My own machine here on my place was a International H. I do not believe that the Ford red on my machine has oxidized so much to change an orange to a deeper red. Colors tend to wash out over time, not enrich themselves. Looking at the colors on the early manuals and photographs seems to support this. I would expect an orange to become more yellowish, not a deeper shade of red. Then again I'm no expert on the effects of deterioriation on colors. I would have much preferred something closer to a Massey or International Red. But I wanted to get this project done so I gritted my teeth and went ahead. I'm sorry if I offended you with my post ,I was not trying to flame you in any way, I onlt wanted to point out that we do have examples of the orignal colors and I wish the replacements were closer. Merry Christmas to all Rich

Paint always tends to darken with age. It will darken some a few hours after it it sprayed. Paint that is insulated with grease and grime will also darken a few shades, why, it is exposed to even more heat than the sun can dish out, being close to the engine and not able to dissipate the heat, while paint exposed will certainly wash out a few shades, it normally will oxidize and become quite thin. I personally , use F/NH paint, who knows better than the original source. I add hardener which will prevent fading (to orange) and make the paint more durable. I have been painting professionally for more than 40 years and I have been getting great results with F/NH paint equal to any high dollar stuff that I have used. In addition, there are many factors that will affect the hue of a paint job. Air pressure is one, thinning ( too much or too little) and base coat, and number of coats. Also adding a hardener will darken the hue as it cures. There is a chance that two people can paint a tractor with the same paint and have it turn out a shade different, this is especially true with laquer paint. I don't post often but this is one topic that I do know something about and I feel the need to share. If you are using spray cans, make sure they have the same batch number, they will vary is hue. Paint mixing was not an exact science in the 1950's , all colors were not the same, in fact a paint mixing supplier that uses a scale to measure the mix will produce a different hue from can to can. In closing, when attending a tractor show, do not critcize a mans tractor for not being the correct color, it may have come out of the same can that yours did. Dave on paint.

Dave ,thanks for the reply. Merry Christmas to you and yours. As I said, I know little or nothing about paint. I guess it's the UV from the sun that washes the colors out. One of the things that bothered me the most about this whole episode was that the label on the can was the right color! It was the paint inside that seemed to be the wrong color. It seemed too orange for a red. So much so that I thought it was Allis Chalmers orange that had been accidentally mislabeled. The company exchanged it free of charge, But the exchange was the same stuff. Man!I was mad! I thought about exchanging it for International red, but I wanted to get this project done and all this exchanging was taking too much time , so I just went ahead. Now don't laugh when I tell you this, but I couldn't get the stuff to spray in my gun so I bit the bullet and brushed it on. Years ago, I worked in a marina where we would "lay on" a coat of varnish on Mahogany speed boats, (Chris Crafts and Centuries etc) With care and practice one can achieve almost a spray finish with a brush. Actually the only place it really matters is on the tin. There's little difference between a spray job and a brush job on a rough casting. So with lots of thin coats and some sanding with each coat, I'm getting a pretty good finish. After all it is a tractor, Not a Rolls Royce. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Rich
