Last October my 8N started a hard metal on metal rap. I'd heard this before (about 8 years ago) when a sleeve dropped. Well, I finally looked into this problem. When I pulled the oil plug i saw and managed to extract a fairly large piece (2 inches square) of a liner. Having never disected an 8N before, my question is, is sleeve replacement to much for a novice to attempt? Secondly, does anyone know of someone in the Erie, PA area who works on 8N's and wopuld do a good job in this repair?

If I were tearing it down for something like a sleeve, I would replace all sleeves, pistons, rings, rod and main bearings, have the crank ground (for an extra $50 in my area), and lap the valves. The complete job could be done for under $500-- in parts and would be a lot of fun and a good learning experience. The most critical part of the whole job would to make sure everything was clean when assembled.
I guess I would also want to replace or rebuild the oil pump. (Don't know what that would cost).
Been there, Done that.

New oil pump gears usually come in the major rebuild kit—they did in mine. Since they're an integral part of the front main bearing cap getting it out is no problem. Check for wear in the oil pump cover. It's soldered to the sump pick-up tube. While you've got it in the machine shop you can have em grind off that .003" or so and tighten up the free end play in the gears. It'll help boost your oil pressure a bit.

if you are a decent shade tree mechanic, you can easily do it yourself. If you aren't in a hurry, the overhaul video on this and other sites is pretty good.

I think though, you'll be looking at more than a sleeve replacement. Your piston and rings on that cylinder are likely damaged. Other damage from the broken sleeve may be expected. Only way to know is to open her up (take head and oil pan off as a minimum). in any even, don't even crank her over until you've fixed the problem.
