Is there a problem with jump starting my 50 8N 6 volt using a 12 volt battery? I had heard that you can damage the distributor and coil this way. Thanks for any advice.

it works with no worries of hurting anything electrical, I hope OH Boy reads Jims idea before he blows up a battery

I'll respectfully disagree with OH Boy. Here's the way I jump a 6V tractor with a 12V source. I've posted this before, but the archives seem to be down right now. So I'll post it again. Step by step here's how I go about it:
1. Make sure the tractor is in neutral! This is absolutely necessary. This procedure bypasses the neutral safety switch. If the tractor is in gear when we get to the last step, someone (probably the person holding the jumper cable) is gonna get run over!
2. Turn the ignition of the tractor on. This procedure uses the 12V source to spin the starter only. It assumes your 6V battery has enough juice left to fire the plugs.
3. Attach one cable to the starter terminal where the cable from the battery attaches. It doesn't matter if you attach pos or neg as the starter doesn't care about polarity.
4. Check the transmission ONE MORE TIME to make sure it is in NEUTRAL!
5. Touch the other cable to a good ground on the tractor (radius rod, running board, seat, whatever). When you do, the starter will spin. If it's getting fire to the plugs and fuel mixed properly with air, it should start and you won't fry any of the 6V ignition system because you have effectively bypassed all of that system.

Good luck!

If you have to do this, just hook up the cables to allow the battery to charge briefly, and don't leave it hooked up to long, the cables will get really hot fast.

You don't want to try to crank it while it is hooked up, you will burn out your coil.

I have done this with my 2N on several occasions with no problems.

Undoubtedly some of the other experts on the board will have something to add to this.
