Question About Replacing Rear Axle Seals

I am currently replacing the rear axle seals on my 8n s/n 95464. When I took the right axle out, there was a worn seal(Metal and rubber) between the Oil Seal retainer (Fig FO121 #6) and the bearing retainer. On the left axle, there was a rubber seal in this area, and another rubber seal about like it next to the Cork Seal. Talked to New Holland dealer, and he said there should be no seals in these areas. Looking in FO-4 manual Fig FO121, it would appear that #7 (Gasket p/n 8N4290)is the rubber seal found on the left side. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Should I go ahead and get 8N4290 for both sides? Thanks for all your help.

Ron,
Your post is well written and documented, thank you. I got my FO-4 out and could followed along. I don't claim to be an expert, but I've been into my '49 seals several times and feel your pain. . I believe the gasket #7 (4290) goes between the seal #8(4115a) and the retainer #6(4248a). This is the only seal used on early 8Ns other than the cork sleeve that goes on the end of the axle just prior to installing the hub. Other seals noted in Fig.F0121 are for later Ns. IMO both sides should be the same. I guess someone added some extra seal in confusion or an attempt to give additional sealing protection. While you're at it, make sure you the bearing preload is correct when you re-assemble(See para. 131). I couldn't get my seals to hold until I replaced both hubs (8N1171). They had worn enough that I couldn't tighten them on the axle. I could only tell they were worn after proper bearing adjustment and then shaking the big wheels to feel the looseness. Also, the big nut that holds the hub on was bottomed out on the axle threads. I hope you don't have to go that far to get yours sealed, just thought I'd throw in my 2¢. Good luck. Steve 8N 169302

Thanks for the advice Steve. After going over the manual several times I was coming to your solution. I am replacing the hubs, changing hydraulic fluid, and just generally cleaning the 8n up. Thanks again for your advice.
