Acquired my 8N yesterday 12/26/02. Runs great! Have much cosmetic restoration to do. Sheet metal bad. My dilema: Serial # shows: *8N24342* which leads me to believe it is a 1947. But!... the Steering gear appears to be a 1948 or late 1949. Perhaps the head was changed sometime in the past. Any other way to target the Manf date?
Starter housing shows: J157
Diff Housing shows: J13 SH 4024
Axel Housing shows: B-191 and B-187
Transmission Housing shows: A 45
Thanks for any help.

Sorry - If one puts on his glasses he can see 5 numbers instead of 6. You are correct it is a 1947.

By the sre # you gave it is a 47 8N, it is possible to use the later steering box on the early 8N, it bolts right up and as long as it comes with the steering arms its a bolt on.

Don't 47 & 48 have the same steering set up? What is different on yours?

My steering box is the spicer type (According to the Smith's ID Web Site. It was changed at serial # 216989 with tapered sector shafts.) But my serial # is much earlier and only 5 digits 24342 My clutch linkage indicates 1948-1952.
Looks like I may have a Hybrid 47-49 based on my engine serial#.

Well at least you have the better steering box. I finished a 52 box 2 weeks ago and am doing an early 48 now and the 52 is by far the better design.

SHRADER,
Well at least you know its a 47 engine...grin...
anything could have been changed, with some careful investagating you should be able to tell what is original and what has been changed. I printed the pages from John Smiths site and use it when ever I'm looking at a tractor.

You are correct that the serial number you list would call out an 8N built in late '47. Also the number J157 on the starter housing would indicate a cast date of Oct 15, 1947 (I think). The axle numbers are not always conclusive because there seem to be a number of different numbering systems used there. Could be the steering box was swapped out at some point. You say you've looked at the serial number several times so i'm assuming there really isn't a 6th digit hiding at in front of that last star or in back of the N. Here's another place to look. Tomorrow when it's light, take a flashlight, a rag and some spray degreaser (I like carb cleaner). Crawl under the tractor and clean off the area next to the hydraulic reservoir drain plug (the middle of the three drain plugs under there). There is usually a date stamped in the pan next to the drain plug. It's not conclusive, but if there's a date from 1947 there I'd say you've got plenty of evidence that it's a '47.

Have you looked over this site?:

Found the date on the plate cover of the hydraulic system it reads: 10-15-47 Looks like I have a 1948 8N

The numbers indicate that it is a 1949.
Check on the left side of this page }Serial Numbers"
N-joy.

Thanks Carl for the referal to the serial number chart for my 8N. I'm still a bit confused since my serial # is only 5 digits following the *8N...

The year 1949 shows 8N and six digits. Is this possible?? I have checked many times and find the serial number rough stamped as: *8N24342*
???
