How would I be exposed to this security menace unless I followed the link that you innocently provided? Please explain. Steve 8N 169302

The flash player is a plug in to your browser (a seperate program that embeds itself within IE or Netscape). That is what controls and gives the browser the ability to run flash content (small programs within a web page specially coded for the flash player to run). Evidently the company that develops the flash player has found a potential security hole that could be exploited if you actually stumbled upon a web page that had flash content specifically created to take advantage of that security hole. The link says that Macromedia (designer of the flash player and content) simply recommends that you upgrade your player and gives you a link to do so.

This issue is actually pretty common. Most products have at least some patches or upgrades that close security holes in them. Your Windows operating system for example has a number of similar holes that "could" be exploited under the correct conditions. If you ever install a fresh early copy of Windows 2000 with IE 5.X you might spend several hours downloading patches, updates and service packs and updating the system before it is really ready to be used. It is also another reason why you should keep your OS and programs updated and patched regularly.

Hope this helps!

If you will look at the url you will see it is the Macromedia (flashplayer) home site. Macromedia is one of the plugins that you have on your system, it's the one that plays those intrusive adds on most web pages. They have found a security flaw in the older versions and they suggest you update to the newest version to mainiain system integrity.

Good question. And what is there that we should be aware of?

If you go there and read it you will find out. It is only a web page you are visiting untill you download the patch.

Pardon my skepticism, but your original post was rather vague. In retrospect, I do recognize the name macromedia, but in this day and age, following unexplained links can be dangerous. Thanks to MikeC for the explanation. Thanks for the warning, albeit OT. Have a Happy and Safe New Year. Steve 8N 169302
