Earlier in the week I read all the archives ref: jumping a 6 volt w/12 volt battery. Today mid-40's in Wisconsin and while changing oil in the car, I thought I would try the battery charger w/ boost on the tractor. All I got was a whinning noise from the starter (60 amp boost on 12 volt). Connected positive lead to starter connection and negative to tractor frame. My ?: Not enought juice in the charger to do the job?? Tractor started without, but thought I would give it a try, just in case we get winter this year in Wisconsin. Thanks for any input. Did you hook it up backwards?
Isn't your 6 volt Positive Ground?
Anyway the charger probably doesn't put out enough amps to jump start unless you have a very heavy duty charger.

I tried the same experiment last year and it didn't work for me either. The answer I got from the electrically knowledged is that the charger doesn't produce near enough amps to engage the bendix. Starter motors pull a lot of amps, I'm told. Try your experiment with a charged 12v battery, connected to the starter as directed in the archives and NOT the battery. Good luck and be careful. Experiences and opinions stated here are my own and may not be based on valid memory or sound judgment. Personal responsibility on your part is required. Steve 8N 169302

Thanks Steve for your input-as you have tried this also. I imagine the 60 amp. boost isn't enough-when you consider the amount of cranking amps in a battery. I will give it a try some day with the car battery.

Hi A1L. I believe you have a 6 volt POSITIVE GROUND SYSTEM, right? Connect your charger the same way. You can use a 12 volt charger on a 6 volt battery, but be very carefull and leave it on only for a short period and be carefull you don't have any sparks or flame around the battery while you have the 12 volt charger on or you just may end up with a face full of battery acid from an explosion. They will immediately start gasing using a 12 volt charger. I would get a 6 volt 12 volt charger and just use the 6 volt side of it and not take chances with the 12 volt side. They are cheap in comparison to the damage you could do to yourself and the tractor.
If your battery is good and full charged, I would suggest you clean all the connections from the battery to the starter. Good luck and Happy New Year. Ron
