Bought a 9N cheap. Has a front end loader which was working. Not now. Came with an air breather with a glass jar not mounted. Painted tractor, started to mount air breather but will not fit. What kind of breather came with 9N. Can't find pictures on internet. Where can I get one and will they take a trade. The tractor does not have a "door" on the hood for an intake. The rear hydraulics work, but the bucket doesn't. Any ideas?

Alan,
If you have a 9N and an air cleaner that takes a jar, than you have the pre-cleaner that was offered after market. On 8Ns this took the place of the door on the hood. On my 2N it mounts under the hood, and looks slightly different from the ones I've seen on 8Ns.
It will fit and was meant to fit under the hood. Mount the oil bath air cleaner first. The horn shaped part mounts to the cap of the oil bath cleaner. The balance mounts below. Have all the bolts slightly loosened to wiggle it in place. I removed mine once, and an extra set of hands was useful in getting it back on.

This is getting more interesting. So, not only do I apparently have a 9N Air cleaner on my early 8, judging by Brian's post (if correct), I have a 9N hood on my 8 also. Hmmm???. I'm not a "resto" buff as I work mine hard, but it is interesting to know. Goes to show how many of the parts are interchangeable.

Les's graphic is correct. The glass jar is a "cyclone" pre-filter (swirls dirty air around and drops it into the jar before the air goes thru the oil bath air cleaner). If you have an N, it WILL have a little door on the right hand side of the hood where the cyclone bolts on. The cylcone was an add-on for a couple extra bucks, but there was a simple metal grill that went over the "door" if you didn't buy one.

This is a little different view.

On the right is the 9N 9600-C1 (with flat top cup assembly), which was replaced by the 9N 9600-C2 (with wing-nut removable top). These were available from 1939-47. In 1948 this was replaced with the 8N 9600-A4, and in 1953 with the EAE 9600-D.

On the right view you'll notice a hole in the side of the cup facing you.

Don,

You may be right about that. You're the parts man. I was looking at the manual and, as I recall, that was the way it was listed, though there were several options. I may have gotten 'em mixed up. Thanks for the correction.

Don:
Are 2N/9N air cleaners interchangable with 8N air cleaners. I have one that came with my early 8N tractor (was not mounted to the tractor at the time) and it is apparently a 9N/2N issue and it interferes with the travel of my 8N throttle linkage (see "another air cleaner question" post on today's forum). Just curious if I can change the oil cup To an 8N variety to to get the clearence I need or do I have to go with a complete new or used 8N air cleaner assembly? Thanks!

My 1949 8N has an air filter assembly that has the flat top (no wing nut and has the 'cyclone' option.
There is no 'element' at the top, just some mesh in the bottom above the oil.

The standard air cleaner assembly for the 2N and 9N looked like this. There were apparently two slightly different models, neither of which would stick out through the hood. That may have been a later invenshoon, or modification depending on its intended use. These engines were used in a variety applications.

Thanks guys! I think that I will try to rig the air cleaner that I have someway. This is a work tractor, definitely not a restoration project. It had been sitting for several years, but I now have it running. Smokes a bit. Paid $100 for the tractor and $400 for a shredder, rear blade, and a sprayer. Also $100.00 for a John Deere Model LA (1946) (Dismanteled). Owner was moving out of state. Now if I can get the ford running and working, I'll start on the JD in earnest. I thought that there might possibly would be an easy solution on the air breather. I mentioned that the bucket wouldn't work now. I was told today that the PTO needs to immobilized so the bucket would work-needs an angle iron triangle to the lift arms(?) or upper link(?) attached to the PTO so it won't turn. Comments appreciated.
