Just bought an 8N in great shape and separately, a 5 foot shredder. The shredder has a PTO shaft which doesn't fit the Ford. I think it was for a Ford Jubilee, or something bigger. Seems to me I should be able to buy a replacement PTO coupling which fits the 1-1/8 splined PTO shaft on the 8N tractor and has a yoke with 1-1/4"(1-5/16"?)holes. I could then knock out the cross piece on the U joint and replace the old part with the new and reinstall it into the U joint. Anybody know where I can buy this kind of part? Is what I am describing practical?

Al..... .....the original 8N PTO shaft was 1-1/8 6-spline. In the 50's the ASAE changed the CAT-1 PTO specs to 1-3/8 6 spline. That is what your shredder has.

DO NOT GET a sleeve step-up adaptor.

Get an 1-1/8F X 1-3/8M Over Running Coupler $60 cheap.

All N-Tractors used with shredders/brushogs need an Over Running Coupler. The ORC prevents all that rotory inertial energy from backdriving thru the PTO into the tranny so that when you clutch to slowdown to go around the corner of the barn, fencepost, creekbank, irrigation canal, wife's car (don't ask) ya don't gett yerselves surprized and run into it. Also prevents nasty tranny noises..... ..... Dell, the self-appointed ORC safety preacher

Come on Dell, do tell. Hey, the story may prevent the same thing from happening to one of us.

Get an overrunning coupler with 1 1/8 female X 1 1/4 male and it will take care of everything. You may have to shorten the shaft of the shredder.

Most any tractor supply store has most any adapter you could possibly want. The adapter you need is most likely 1-1/8" to 1-3/8". Make sure you get an overrun coupler also.
