I have a 1947 Ford 2n that I am painting this week end. Question is what color should it be? Light gray, med gray, dark gray or gray and red. It appears to have been gray and red originally.

Wow!!! Lots of information and experiance out there. Thanks!!! When I got this tractor in trade several years ago I was told that it was an 8N. Later I found out that it was actually a 2N. I liked the light grey and red colors. I finished sanding the last coat of primer on the hood and fenders after work today and sealed them with a primer sealer. I will be off to Metro New Holland to buy the paint from Brian in parts. He is also restoring a 2N and has the correct paint. It will be dark grey. Thanks again.

The top photo shows a "restored" tractor with a typical wrong color paint job. It's too blue and too light. The bottom photo is an all-original 9N with the correct color. It's sort of muddy dark gray. (from Robert Pripps'Vintage Ford Tractors, p 72)

The Ford New Holland dealer in Asheville carries the light beige/grey 8N paint. They insist that it is the only grey Ford ever used from 1939-47. Thats what their book says.

If you're going for original colors on a 2N dont go to the FNH dealer.

Don't make everyone think that all New Holland (Ford) dealers do not know what paint or parts to sell the customer, there are still some dealers around that do know, you should ask first how long they were selling Ford first then you will know if they are familiar with your tractor or not, they should have been selling them for at least 25 years so they do not sell you the wrong part. The reason Ford quit selling the 9N gray paint is when Ford and Ferguson split, Ford did not want tractors looking like Fergusons tractor so Ford told the dealers to paint the 9N like the new Ford tractor (8N) so it looked like more were around. Agreed. There is a dealer in Ankeny, Iowa that is great. I would recommend them to anyone.

Don't take it personally, but these guys have been in business as long as you have. The point is...Ford either can't or won't supply the correct original color and they really don't care. They are very good about mechanical help.

The choice is ultimately yours, but I think the question was "what color should it be?", assuming you to mean "What was it originally?". With the passage of time, and the many choices made, there are many who truly don't know what they were originally. The picture shows one of mine (far left) posing with a couple friends, all in original color.

...to me, George. Most 9/2N's are way too light or way too blue. Outstanding, IMO!

As you see there is a variety of opinions here as to what it could/should be painted. The original 2N, as you have read in the other posts is battleship gray. The gray color for the 2N is just what you would imagine, and just what you see in the pics posted by Ed. The 8N "gray" however is not the same, it is almost a tan with gray or as my financial manager here reports its a light taupe color.
Keep in mind that this is what factory specs were. Now the choice is yours as to how you wish to paint it. I find value in both opinions here, some insist on the original colors and I understand why. Others feel that you should paint it however you please. I follow the latter thinking, do what you want. My first 2N is dressed as an 8N. However my current project, which is a total rebuild/remanufacture will be all original including the paint. What matters is, keep her running and treat her right. As always...IMHO

Hi Russ. Here's some scans from Peterson & Beemer's "Originality Guide - Ford N Series Tractors (ISBN 0-7603-0289-8).

Here's a 1945 2N:

Here's a '42 2N with steel wheels and hand crank, which is how they came from the factory during the early war years:

Here's a pic of a '47, '45, and '42 (l to r):

Hi, Ed... My 46 2N has the round-bottom base on the air cleaner, did they come from the factory both ways? I always thought the flat bottom was more often seen on the 8N's...

And is that an 'owner-installed' bracket for keep ing the drawbar/hitch parts on the left fender of the 45? Thanks duey

All 2N's, when they rolled off the assembly line, were solid gray (the darker "battleship gray")
Rumor has it that when the 8N's began showing up in dealerships many solid gray 2N's went unsold because of the color. Some of the last 2N's may have been repainted by the dealer. However the original color was all gray-no red belly.

That being said-it is your tractor and you should paint it the color that you like. I personally prefered the 8N colors hence my 2N is red/gray.

You might try this source for paint. Don't know anything about em personally but the site and claims look good. Think I' gonna try em. I just ordered their catalog.

Battleship Gray and red were the original colors for the Ford 2N. Ford tractor dealers should still stock the paint you need, if not in stock, they would know where you can get it.

I was hoping that it was grey and red although some of the dark grey tractors look great. Thanks for the info. I will check with our local ford dealer.

9N/2N Fords were all gray from the factory - a dark gray. Many dealers repainted them red and gray when they were traded in.

The 8N, starting with the 1948 model (first released in 1947) was a lighter gray sheetmetal with a red belly.

Paint it any color you like - it's your tractor after all.
