Why won't my 8N start?!?

Ok, you 8N afficionados. Help out a single lady, please!

I have an 8N, circa 1952. It runs terrific, if it starts, which is never. I've replaced many 6V batteries, have had mobile Ford tractor service innumerable times, installed a commercial grade 8V battery, have sweet talked it to death, and still it (its name is Barney) is uncooperative.

The Ford repair service tells me there's nothing wrong, and when they come to jump it, Barney fires right up. He'll be ok for around 3 weeks, then the battery dies, won't stay charged after overnight charging.

If someone doesn't help me out, Barney is destined for sale!

Andie, something is draining your battery ( short somewhere ? ) Do as Dell says, in the mean time you might disconnect one of the battery terminals to keep from running down, I would also replace that 8 volt battery with a good HD 6 volt because that generator is not keeping it fully charged.

Hmmm.... 8 volt battery 6 volt generator 6 volt regulator
I see a problem.

I had the same problem with my 9N. It had an
8 volt battery in it when i bought it. However
it also had a 6 volt regulator and 6 volt generator. Can't keep the battery charged that
way. Found out that a 6 volt battery charger will
keep an 8 volt battery charged. Driving around or
running the head lights would drain the battery.
Quite a PITA.

Get a 6 volt battery and be sure that all your
wire connections are "Clean Tight and Bright".
And don't be using them wimpy 12 v battery cables.
I think that the gurus around here reccomend
00 size.

Andie..... ....from the information that you've provided, basically yer sayin' "can't keep the battery charged". I'd suggest that whomever is your ford mechanic, fire him.

1) Disconnect your battery, its suppost to be "positive ground".
2) Take your generator off (lables the 3-wires) 3) Take your square voltage regulator off (lable the 4-wires)
4) Take all your electrical parts into a real automotive electrical shop for a checkout (look in yellow pages)
They don't haffta have the tractor to check the parts out. (be certain you lable all the wires)

Hope this gets ya started in the right direction..... ....respectfully, Dell who sez: "ask if you don't understand, we want to help"
