Sometimes when I depress the clutch pedal, the tractor wants to keep going and it is difficult to shift gears. It is adjusted about all the way down on the adjustment thing-a-ma-jiggy on the pedal linkage. Does this mean I need a new clutch or is there some other solution??? Thanks.....

I once had a cracked pressure plate spring housing that was preventing full release of the clutch. When the clutch pedal was pressed, the pressure plate housing crack would open up and not allow full movement of the plate. This was in a car, but the same could happen in a tractor. I also recently had a bad pressure plate assembly that was causing clutch slippage. If you can't find anything wrong with the external linkage, I would replce both the clutch disk and pressure plate.

May be oil on the clutch disc.

Look closely at the little lever that is attached with a rivet to the throwout bearing actuating rod that passes through the tractor. If this lever cracks at the base of the lever it can cause all sorts of problems. What is does is close up when the pedal is up and when the pedal is depressed the crack opens up instead of turning the throw out bearing shaft.
If it is cracked it must be rewelded and be sure to hold pressure against it to close the crack before you weld it.

Mine does the same thing you describe, and I had suspected that some wearing/slop of that li'l pin was to blame, but I never really looked for cracks while under pressure. Thanks for the tip!! I'll check.

Mine does the same thing 'sometimes'...

Found out it is always when I am plowing snow and the snow packs under my left foot and prevents full downward travel of the pedal...

Just a thought...

Phil,

"Sometimes" tells me that you might have a linkage problem or if the tractor leaks oil from the weep hole under the clutch, an oily clutch.

Either way it sounds like time to split the tractor for a new clutch and related parts. Don't forget to replace the trans front seal and if necessary the rear main engine seal. You might get away with just the bottom half of the engine seal.

GOOD POINT THERE MOUNTAINMAN THAT FRONT INPUT SEAL OF TRANNY AND BOOT OFF GEARSHIFT WILL CAUSE WATER TO FILTER THROUGH FRONT SHAFT OF TRANNY AND ACTUALLY RUST THE CLUTCH TO FLYWHEEL FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE WITH A 2000 THIS FALL! IF TRACTOR SITS OUTSIDE.
