The old 48 lift has been a little touchy lately. It all atarted when I worked her like crazy with the box blade. Backed her up into a pile of dirt and the lift stuck. Decided to pull her apart and clean her and see if the problem was obvious. When I pulled the pump out and rocked the rocker lever it seemed like one of the valves was stuck. I assume it was the exhaust valve since the lift would not even go down. I cleaned the inside of the entire system, replaced the rear pto seal and put back 134 in her. She seemed to work but got stuck all the way up when I put a post hole digger on her that I got free to see if it worked. Got a little disappointed and left her alone to find that she foud a way to settle down the next day. She was still sticking a little but not so much. Worked her again the other day with the box blade and decided to try to put the position control lever forward (in constant draft control) to see what she would do. She didn't like it at all. No action whatsoever. When I put her back in position control she still worked. Also it does not seem that the lift goes up nearly as high as my 841. Can anyone answer some of these lift questions?

p.s. Put new NAPA copper plug wires as recomended by Dell and hotter Autolites and her performance is remarkably better. Thanks to all!

Seems that the control valve was and is partially sticking still. With the good cleaning and the new oil it should get better the more you use it.

The draft is not working because of a change in the linkage internally and probably a loose fitting outside big draft spring yoke where the top link attaches just above it.

The position linkage adjustment is out too and that is why it won't come all the way up. There is a cam follower pin or dowel that always wears out that causes most of the troube with the position or height control adjustment.

I have a jig and booklet that shows how to properly adjust the 8N lift the first time. No guess work.

See the link below for more information.

Thanks Zane! I have read some on your ZANE THANG and it sounds like something I'll try. Tomorrow I pick up a 740 that has been sitting out for 7 years. Still in fair shape, considering. WIll invest in it a bit.
