I have not been able to find any information in the manuals or archives except one that was talking about some spring and if falls in tranny you have problems. If someone knows how to do this so I won't have this problem I would appreciate it. If you could give me a step by step way to do this or a place to find it. Any pics would also be great.

The spring you need to be concerned with losing into the trans. is under a lip on the back, next to the seat, of the top cover.
It is an small spring with a ball underneath it.
Its purpose is to lock the shifter into each gear.

Thanks Patrick for the information. Is this the spring that was in the other article that says you have to becareful that it may pop out and fall in the trany. I take it you didn't seem to have much problem with it except in compressing it.

Arlon,

In the diagram Ed Gooding posted the spring that 'pops out' and can fall into the trans is # 7234

The spring that is hard to compress is # 7227.
It goes onto the shift lever itself on the under side of the coveer.

1. Take a look a Fig. 192 in the IT-FO-4 (my page 132). Familiarize yourself with the parts and their names.

2. Remove the transmission cover. You may have to remove the dash in order to remove the front center bolt on the cover....my dash was already off, but I vaguely remember it being in the way...

3. Compress the gear shift lever spring and remove the seat. The gear shift lever has been milled on two sides in order to make seat insertion/removal easier. You will want to try and rotate the seat until it lines up with the milled sides and it will come out easily.

4. Once the seat is out, the whole lever comes up and out. You may need to rotate the lever 180 degrees in order to get it through the cover.

5. Reverse the process to replace.

The hardest part is compressing the spring. I'm sure some experienced Board member has an easy way to do it. I replaced the pin on my lever last weekend using a screwdriver to compress the spring. It wasn't elegant, but it worked.

Good luck!
