It seems everytime I go down to Dads (about 410 miles one way) I have to repair the 8-n or 2-n cause they won't start. He is always moving batteries around on stuff and then having to jump it off with something else. 'course then the coil is burnt up cause he leaves 12 volts hooked up with the key on. No need in telling him different because he is 85 and ain't gonna change. I'm thinking about building a 12 volt electronic ign. sys. for the two n's using an old front dist housing for a base. I did this years ago on a 4 cyl evinrude that kept eating high-dollar power packs. Anybody ever try this? I looked at the archives where the coil was remotely mounted but that still depended on points and condenser. I realize this will be no good for a restored N but I would like to be able to spend more time visiting dad and less time working on his tractor when I'm there. If you have any ideas thanks in advance.

ron,

There was an article in the N - news about just such a modification. Genessee also will make the conversion even though they don't advertize it.
Seems the hard part is getting the timing just right the first time.

I gutted my coil and usedit for a junction box. Then I bought a MSD ignition module and coil. and I can not believe the differance that it made. Some will say that if every thing is proper that this is overkill. Well my 48N had compression figures of 10 30 75 40. needless to say I have my N apart in the garage and the hot rod in the driveway much to my sons displeasure. Seems that Fathers always do something to displease their sons. I guess that these are minor irritations compaired to some.
