From what I've read on previous posts it sounds like I need a coil, but here is my problem. Engine rebuilt, was wired without resistor on dash but I've since put a new one on and rewired, carburetor kit installed, points and condensor new and just cleaned. When it was wired without the resistor it was hard starting but once running it was good, for a while then starts to carbon foul plugs. Now that i've rewired with resistor, it has started twice. The first time it started for a couple seconds and quit, it was cold, then would not start. Second time, I pulled the distributor, stretched the spring on the coil, cleaned and set the points and put it back together. It started right up and was sounding real good, for a couple minutes then started to run rough and died. Would not even sputter while trying to start. Should I buy a coil?? Thanks for any help.

I've got spark, but don't know if it's a strong one. I've cleaned all filters and tank. On one of these websites it says the large needle that is adjustable by hand is the high speed. While adjusting it on my tractor at idle it affects the idle circuit and when I open the throttle and adjust the "Slow Speed circuit" it affects the high speed on mine?? One thing that puzzles me, is last night after I put the distributor back on and tried to start it, it took right off with very little miss. Then the miss got progressivly worse till it died. Has not started in the 3 or 4 tries since then.

I'm ready to have a weenie roast with mine!!!
Thanks for the info, Al

From what you are saying about your plugs being carboned up you might very well have too much gas going to the engine. Could have a stuck float, plugged air intake piping, carb adjusted too rich or just another type of carb problem. I would also replace those plugs. That's not to say you might also have an ignition problem along with the engine running too rich.

ALmo. it could be a whole bunch of things... you didn't mention if you have spark at the plugs.... Have you given it a shot of starting fluid? Pull the inlet pipe off the carb and try that; cheap & easy. Do you get a good steady flow of fuel from the drain plug on the carb?? Sure should be.

Yes, it could be a bad coil, but don't get fixated on just one thing.... there's gotta be fuel.. there's gotta be ignition.... there's gotta be air....all of these at the right moment. Lose any one of those and guess what... you get only the unique sounds of a Ford starter.
grinding away.

You might have only a faulty ignition switch... you could have an open resistor.... there really is a long laundry list of things to be considered. That quick shot of starting fluid, a little jumper across the switch, can help eliminate one possibility at a time... good luck, guy.
