If you take off the head, it would be worth your time and $ to have a machine shop check it out and mill it flat. If it is slightly warped, a new head gasket will still leak. Last year it cost me $40 for a machine shop to check the head and to mill it down. Head was slightly warped. No more problems.

Philip..... ....what mountainman said.....
Most oily sheen innna radiator water is combustion by-products being forced past a leaky/weak headgasket. Compression check is good for finding that. Ford specs 90 psi min. Sometimes you can stop the leak by re-torquing the headbolts 70 ft/lbs. Mostta time, nuttin to worry about, unless of course, you really do have a leaking headgasket $15.

Recommend you get an I&T FO-4 manual. Available at sponsors of this fine N-Board, most tractor parts emporiums, www.n-news.com also has great archive of implement manuals. Why even my local (byte my tongue) John Deere dealer has'em fer sale at their parts counter. $29 cheap, gettcha one and readitt..... ...Dell

philip,

I think I'd start by doing a compression check (dry then wet and write down the readings) and "reading" the spark plugs while they are out.

If it is just a sheen on the top of the water, it's not unusual. Stop Leak does this if it's been used in the past. I flushed mine several times (just clean water) and cleared up. Could be small leak in the head gasket. If it's oil drops or discolored water, I'd think about cracked head. Be sure you check your oil for water. HTH

It is not uncommon to have a small amount of oil in water. Not that this is normal or it should be there. Having never had the head off of mine I am not sure if a head gasket could do it but if it has wwaterjackets between cylinder as cars do that is what I would look for. If not a small crack in the head. Hope this helps.
