My 8N has no spark...

Just got an 8N from my uncle the other day and it won't start. I replaced the cap, rotor, points, condenser and plugs and now I have spark at the coil. My problem is it keeps eating rotors under the distributor cap. I put the new one on and after a few cranks it was broken. I then put the old one back on and it too is now broken. Why is it doing this? I think it might start if it weren't for the broken parts. Also, does anyone have a part number for just the rotor for NAPA? My local TSC does not sell just the rotor, you have to buy the cap and points too. Thanks for your help...

Make sure the metal clip at the top of the disti shaft is in place, and oriented correctly. The rotor should be a very tight fit over the end of the shaft and the clip. Push it on and press it all the way down. You may think it is on correctly but still not have it seated. There should not be any rotational play at all between the rotor and the shaft.

Remove the spark plug wires, and spin the engine with the starter. Watch the distributor cap. If it is "rocking" (being hit by the rotor), then the rotor is not on all the way.

When I put the disti together the first time on my rebuild, I thought that I had the rotor on correctly. But then on the spin-up for oil prime, I noticed the "rocking" caused by rotor/cap interference. By catching it at low speed, I was able to avoid damaging the rotor or cap.

Did you put the little metal clip on top of the rotor when you reinstalled it?

oops i sure screwed up on that one!!
since i see now its a NAA, with side mount of course, my past experience would say that the cause is almost certainly that the cap is slightly cocked,( not fully pushed down ) take piece of wood or something that fits between the wires and use the palm of your hand to tap it down , befor cranking the engine , This was a common occurance on those side mounts

Any idea what the part number for the rotor might be at NAPA or Carquest?

Last sunner I gave my 52 8N a tuneup, new COPPER wires, plug dis, cap, points and rotor. It would not start, the rotor ate the new dist cap, To make a long story short the new rotor from a ford dealer was too big, it was just big enough to eat the dist cap prongs. I replaced the old dist cap and the old rotor, and it fired right up.

Look at the rotor, even put back some of the old stuff one at a time to ID the problem.

Might be worth your while to repair your distributor with it removed from the tractor,if not already done that way.
That way you can turn it over by hand before installing it.
Just be sure that u are careful to note the offset driving tang, where it meshes with the slot in the front of the camshaft. IT GOES ON ONLY ONE Way,if you were to force it on wrong u can do some real damage
good luck

Rotors don't normally just break. Did you install it correctly? Is it hitting something? Exactly what do you mean by breaking? Where is the break? Is the cap located correctly, and snapped down tight? I suggest just getting everything new if you have to, and assemble very carefully. Then double check before turning it over. Good luck.
