For all you chainless snow plowers: Ask and ye shall receive! I work at the heating plant at our local university (Western Illinois University), and one of my jobs is to dispense ash to tandem trucks as the need arises. Lots of county, township, and city trucks pass through, grateful for the free ash. I asked one of the county guys a few weeks ago about what they do with old worn-out chains from their trucks. The guy (Brian) said that they usually sit in the garage until someone throws them out! I asked if there was any way that I would get some for my tractor ('50 8N), and he said, sure, he'd bring me some. I thought "right!", and forgot about it. Last week, when they came for more ashes, he brought me three separate sets--enough to make one complete set for my tractor! The are a little worn, but not nearly as much as the set currently on my 2N. Thanks, Brian! The moral: don't be afraid to ask. If you don't take them, they may end up in the junk!

It's a good idea to have some repair links in the tool box to replace links that break. I like the squeez on style for this.

Great Idea, wonder if I can get some from the shops here at Southern...not as much snow here as you might get. Thanks for the idea..

Western Illinois University..... ..hmmm, that's in Macomb isn't it?

I went through there last summer. It was a Sunday and we stopped to attend church there. Very nice town!

We stayed the night before in Beardstown.....now there's another story!

Jim,

Thanks. It is a nice town, most of the time. What church? I live north and west of town, by the city reservoir Spring Lake. Wish I'd known you were through here--you could have stopped by and had a barley pop with me! Let me know next time.

Ron

Well, maybe something other than barley pop. I'm one of those tee-totalling Mormons. We were there to tour the rebuilt temple in Nauvoo. Needless to say there were a LOT of out-of-towners there. The bishop got up and asked all the visitors in the congregation to stand up. About 2/3 of us stood!

I should be through there again someday. I'll let you know (here) before I come. I'd like to meet more N-boarders.

Chuck,

Stop in and say hey sometime. Turn south off Murray into the H.P. area (across from the stadium). My door is beside the ash silo.

I get the worn Sweeper Brushes to make Cow Scratchers with. I have 3 5ft tall ones allready and the cows love them and the price is right. Mark H.

That is exactly how I got the edges for my back blade and other things. The county calls them worn out with plenty of use left in them and is glad to get them out from under foot. You will never know unless you ask.

Your mileage may vary

Well, I HAD a nice blade edge, too.....

About a month ago, some other guys came in from Oquawka to get a load of ash, and the brought me an old edge from a road drag. It was about half an inch thick, 10 inches wide and 10 feet long! It was made of (they said) carbide, and had hardly any wear. I had no idea WHAT I'd do with it. I did need an edge for my 6 foot Dearborn blade, but that was overkill! Anyway, it sat here for a few weeks, and a day or two before I was going to take it home, someone stole it! Oh well, problem solved!
